Fermilab celebrates its achievements, diversity

About 1,200 people gathered in Wilson Hall atrium Friday to celebrate the achievements of the past year during the Labwide Party.

Employees and users brought in food, clothing and collectables representing their heritage and hobbies for display in 20 booths at the first Diversity Fair at Fermilab, including items for the Korean and Mexican booths shown here.

Fermilab blends art and nature with physics

When the mood strikes for a little culture, Fermilab's probably not even on your radar.

But you needn't be an astrophysicist to appreciate the cultural opportunities at the world-renowned national accelerator laboratory in Batavia. A pioneer in particle physics research, Fermilab regularly hosts concerts, films, lectures, folk dancing, stage productions and lectures, and has an art gallery to boot.

The 6,800-acre campus is also a nature lover's paradise with miles of scenic trails winding through woodlands, grasslands and more than 1,100 acres of restored tall-grass prairie. Myriad species of birds, butterflies, frogs and even buffalo can be found on the grounds.

That this oasis of art and nature can exist alongside the bustle of cutting-edge physics research, a place where you're monitored by security cameras and greeted by a guard requesting photo identification, is no accident. It was the brainchild of Fermilab's first director, Dr. Robert Wilson, who believed science and technology were not only connected to art, but born from it.

CERN prepares to celebrate completion of the LHC

Swiss President Pascal Couchepin and French Prime Minister François Fillon will be joined at CERN* tomorrow by science ministers from CERN's Member States and around the world to inaugurate the Large Hadron Collider. The world's largest and most complex scientific instrument, the LHC circulated its first beam on 10 September 2008.

"The LHC is a marvel of modern technology," said CERN Director General Robert Aymar, "which would not have been possible without the continuous support of our Member States. This is an opportunity for me to thank them on behalf of the world's particle physics community."

Bike path closures begin Oct. 20
Beginning Monday, Oct. 20, the bike path between Road D and the Wilson Hall east parking area will close for construction. A project will begin Monday to install a redundant source of drinking water for Wilson Hall. Crews will excavate and install a water service pipe between the reflecting pond and the Tevatron berm, adjacent to the bike/walking path. Check the map for alternate routes. All bicyclists should follow Illinois regulations and be aware of their surroundings and traffic. Contact Tom Lackowski at tomski@fnal.gov with any questions.

Lecture on Litvinenko death
Borys Mychalczak, a New York-based associate clinical professor in radiation oncology, will present "The Death of Alexander Litvinenko: Understanding the Health Effects of Polonium 210 Exposure" at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, in Wilson Hall's One West. The talk is sponsored by The Ukrainian Medical Association of North America, Illinois Branch, as part of its fall lecture, which coincides with a tour of Fermilab. The lecture is free and open to all Fermilab employees and users.

DreamWeaver CS3: Advanced Nov. 5
An advanced course in Dreamweaver CS3 will take place Nov. 5. Attendees can learn to establish database connectivity, work with record sets, create interactive page elements and administer database records and Web sites.
