Diversity Fair today
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Fermilab will hold its inaugural Diversity Fair. The fair will give employees a chance to see the many aspects of diversity at the laboratory. The fair includes a variety of performances in Ramsey Auditorium (noon to 1 p.m.), including music and dance, as well as tables with ethnic desserts in the atrium.
About 20 display tables in the cafeteria and atrium (see map) will provide information on various ethnic groups from Europe, Asia, the Americas and Africa. Other display tables will have information on veterans and people with disabilities as well as gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender people. Everybody is invited.
Please note that the cafeteria will close at 1 p.m. to begin the setup for the labwide party. Lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

To say thank you and to celebrate Fermilab's achievements of the last year, the Fermi Research Alliance invites all Fermilab employees, retirees, users, contractors and DOE employees to today's party in the Wilson Hall atrium from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
- Lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cafeteria and lunch area close at 1 p.m. Please use the seating on the 2nd floor crossover after 1 p.m.
- To enter drawings for door prizes and to receive a ticket for a free Fermilab travel mug, bring your postcard invitation to the party and drop it in the raffle drum located outside One West. Users can pick up a postcard at the Users' Office. Drawings start at 4 p.m. You must be present to win. Second-chance drawing at 6 p.m.

CERN releases analysis of LHC incident
Investigations at CERN following a large helium
leak into sector 3-4 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) tunnel have
confirmed that cause of the incident was a faulty electrical connection
between two of the accelerator's magnets. This resulted in mechanical
damage and release of helium from the magnet cold mass into the tunnel.
Proper safety procedures were in force, the safety systems performed as
expected, and no one was put at risk. Sufficient spare components are in
hand to ensure that the LHC is able to restart in 2009, and measures to
prevent a similar incident in the future are being put in place.
"This incident was unforeseen," said CERN Director General Robert Aymar,
"but I am now confident that we can make the necessary repairs, ensure
that a similar incident can not happen in the future and move forward to
achieving our research objectives."

SUMMARY OF THE ANALYSIS OF THE 19 SEPTEMBER 2008 INCIDENT AT THE LHC
On 19 September 2008, during powering tests of the main dipole circuit in
Sector 3-4 of the LHC, a fault occurred in the electrical bus connection
in the region between a dipole and a quadrupole, resulting in mechanical
damage and release of helium from the magnet cold mass into the tunnel.
Proper safety procedures were in force, the safety systems performed as
expected, and no-one was put at risk.

Opportunistic storage increases grid job success rate

The DZero high-energy physics experiment at Fermilab, an Open Science Grid user, typically submits 60,000-100,000 simulation jobs per week at 23 sites. The experiment's application executables make many requests for input data in quick succession. Due to the lack of storage local to the processing sites, up until recently much of DZero's simulated data had to transfer in real-time over the wide area network, leading to high latencies, job timeouts and job failures.
OSG worked with member institutions to allow DZero to use opportunistic storage, that is, idle storage on shared machines, at several sites. This represents the first successful deployment of opportunistic storage on OSG, and opens the door for other OSG Virtual Organizations. With allocations of up to 1 TB at sites where it processes jobs, DZero has increased its job success rate from roughly 30 percent to upwards of 85 percent.
Hosting storage resources is often tricky, especially for smaller grid sites, both in terms of hardware and professional expertise, says Abhishek Singh-Rana, coordinator of the Virtual Organizations group in OSG, which helps science communities achieve good results using the OSG. For this reason, the VO group negotiated with the larger OSG science communities, US ATLAS and US CMS, to allow other OSG communities to use their storage resources opportunistically. So far, DZero has used storage at six US-LHC Tier-2 sites, and is looking for more.

Bike path closures begin Oct. 20
Beginning Monday, Oct. 20, the bike path between Road D and the Wilson Hall east parking area will close for construction. A project will begin Monday to install a redundant source of drinking water for Wilson Hall. Crews will excavate and install a water service pipe between the reflecting pond and the Tevatron berm, adjacent to the bike/walking path. Check the map for alternate routes.
