New award named after former Fermi physicist

J.D. Jackson (right) poses here with former Fermilab director John Peoples at a wine and cheese Colloquium in 2002.

Graduate students and physics professors know John David Jackson simply as "Jackson," the theorist who published the most widely used textbook on classical electrodynamics.

Many Fermilab employees remember Jackson, now of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as a founder of the Fermilab Friday wine and cheese seminars, which started in 1972. He was also the former head of the Fermilab theory group. Jackson paid for the first bottles of wine out of pocket.

Now Jackson has another legacy. The American Association of Physics Teachers announced its tribute to the former Fermilab scientist's contributions to graduate education with the creation of an award named after him.

To earn the John David Jackson Award, scientists must have improved graduate education through a series of mentorship programs, the publication of a renowned textbook, through a legendary course, a collection of courses, summer school lectures or pedagogical review articles.

To learn more about the award, see the AAPT announcement (pdf). Colleagues may contribute to the endowment for the award here.

Brinson lecture on Astronomy in the New Millennium

Wendy Freedman, director of the Carnegie Observatories, will give a free lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, at Assembly Hall Illinois State Museum in the Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph St. in Chicago.

The talk "Astronomy in the New Millennium: New Windows on the Cosmos" is the inaugural Brinson Lecture at The University of Chicago and part of Science Chicago.

Freedman is in charge of building the world's largest telescope. However, she is perhaps best known for leading the team that determined the rate at which our universe is expanding. Freedman will focus on recent astronomical discoveries, and show how giant new telescopes planned for both the ground and space will address some of the biggest mysteries in astronomy today.

CERN rivals not surprised by melting magnets

From USA Today, Sept. 28, 2008

The daring success of the world's largest atom smasher on its opening day was more surprising to many scientists than the troubles it subsequently developed.

A problem with a magnet connection will delay the start of experiments for half a year, partly because the $3.8 billion accelerator is so complicated to repair. Physicists - some of whom waited two decades to use the new equipment - will now have to wait three more weeks for the damaged section to be warmed up to room temperature.

They can then get inside to see what went wrong.

Yet such glitches are not uncommon. Michael Harrison, who worked on Fermilab's Tevatron collider and designed and built the United States' other superconducting collider at Brookhaven on Long Island, said both machines had similar start-up problems.

"You find all kinds of little issues as you start to turn it on and make it work," Harrison said in a telephone interview from Brookhaven.

Rival operations in the United States watched with admiration as CERN flawlessly launched its new Large Hadron Collider before the world's news media, the first time such a start-up has been public anywhere.

"A huge cheer went up from here," said Judy Jackson, spokeswoman for the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory outside Chicago, whose Tevatron is losing its title of world's highest-energy collider with the start-up of CERN's.

Scientists watching the Sept. 10 event live at Fermilab "were all holding our breath," Jackson said. "People here had been through this and said, 'Oh man, I hope it works.'"

Influenza

The seasonal time for coughs and chills is approaching, but you don't have to get waylaid by the flu. To increase your chances of staying healthy during the upcoming months, take advantage of Fermilab's flu vaccination program and follow a few common-sense precautions.

Fermilab flu vaccination clinics will take place Thursday, Oct. 2, Tuesday, Oct. 14, and Tuesday, Oct. 21. Additional information about Fermilab's program and an online schedule can be found at the ES&H Section's homepage.

The Visiting Nurse Association and American Lung Association also will provide flu shots and have posted their shot schedules for the 2008-2009 season.

A yearly flu vaccine is the most effective preventive measure you can take against influenza, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The vaccine provides the most protection against the three strains of the virus predicted most likely to spread that year and also provides lesser protection against some of the other strains. This may not prevent you from catching those strains, but will quicken your recovery or lessen your symptoms.

In the United States, the flu season usually begins in November, peaks in February and ends in March. Symptoms develop quickly and can include fever, headache, muscle aches, chills, extreme tiredness and dry cough. Other respiratory and gastronintestinal symptoms may occur, but are more common in children. Most people recover in a week or two, but serious complications such as bronchitis, pneumonia and dehydration can occur. The flu also can worsen chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes or congestive heart failure.

Besides getting a vaccination you should practice basic infection control measures to avoid catching the virus.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your arm when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
  • Avoid sick people. If you get sick, limit contact with others.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

New Travel Office form effective Oct. 1
Effective Oct. 1, the Travel Office and Accounting Department will discontinue the use of the four-part Travel Authorization/ Expense Voucher (TA/EV). For trips approved on or after Oct. 1, employees should use the new TA/EV Excel spreadsheet for travel authorization, travel advance and travel settlement. Trips approved prior to Oct. 1 on the old four-part form should be completed on that form. The new form has a procedure section that outlines the travel approval, advance and reimbursement process. The form is available on the Accounting and Travel Office Web sites.
