P5 roadmap, Fermilab future focus of workshop

Researchers gathered at Fermilab last week to discuss plans for the laboratory to remain vital in the context of the recently released recommendations of the Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel.
More than 150 people attended the third Workshop on Physics with a high-intensity proton source held Thursday, June 5, and Friday, June 6. A Town Hall meeting kicked off the workshop and focused largely on moving the field and Fermilab experiments forward within the context of a changing fiscal environment.
"The workshop was a great success. We discussed and will continue to develop both short- and long-term experimental strategies aligned with P5's recommendations," said Young-Kee Kim, Fermilab's deputy director and the workshop co-organizer.
The workshop followed Fermilab's Annual Users' Meeting, which also included talks relevant to Fermilab's future programs and Project X, a proposed high-intensity proton source. The workshop incorporated recommendations of the newly released P5 report, which laid out a roadmap for particle physics in the U.S. for the next decade.
During this workshop, attendees built on progress from two previous workshops, which focused on physics unique or complementary to the LHC during the next decade. These workshop results were included in P5's development of the roadmap.
During the Town Hall meeting, panelists addressed Fermilab's proposed experiments at different frontiers and took questions on the state of the industry. Workshop panelists included: P5 Chair Charlie Baltay of Yale University, the Department of Energy's Acting Associate Director Dennis Kovar, Director of the Division of Physics for the National Science Foundation Joseph Dehmer and Fermilab Director Pier Oddone. The workshop continued on Friday with a series of talks by the leaders of the proposed experiments.
Plans are in the works for a fourth workshop in January 2009. Slides from selected talks are available on the workshop Web site.
"Fermilab looks forward to an exciting program for many decades to come," Kim said.

Fermilab needs boost from energy bill

In his 22 years as a high-energy physicist at Fermilab, Bill Foster was part of a team seeking the elusive top quark. In his few months as 14th District congressman, Foster is part of a team seeking elusive federal funding for high-energy research.
Foster joined other Illinois members of Congress and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin two weeks ago in proclaiming the U.S. Senate had approved $250 million in funding for energy, helping to assure Fermilab in Batavia could continue its research and retain staffing that was threatened by budget cuts late last year. Now Foster will push the concept among his colleagues in the House in hopes of approving the bill, which earmarks $100 million for the Department of Energy's Office of Science and another $150 million to the National Science Foundation.
That news was followed by the announcement last week that a $5 million anonymous donation was provided to Fermilab, assuring that the lab can function at top levels through this fall and restore some of the cutbacks it instituted six months ago.

Users' Meeting

Last week we had a very successful Users' Meeting at Fermilab. Organized by Fermilab's very active Users Executive Committee, the agenda included presentations on science at Fermilab, on the perspectives of the DOE and NSF for our field, on the P5 report that contains a strategic plan for the national program, on physics plans in Europe and Asia, and on policy issues within the Administration and Congress. I want to express my gratitude to our users for the excellent organization and their commitment to enhance the intellectual life and the quality of life at Fermilab. The Users' Meeting touches all the issues relevant to our laboratory and our field and it showed us that we do live in a world of many interesting dimensions.
Connected with the Users' Meeting we held a "town meeting" to discuss the P5 plan. We appreciated the participation of Dr. Dennis Kovar of DOE, Dr. Joe Dehmer of the NSF and Professor Charlie Baltay, who headed the P5 strategic planning process. We had a very extensive and open discussion on the many complexities that we face in our field and got to appreciate once again the effort of P5 in putting together a compelling plan for the future of our field.
Following the Users' Meeting, we held the third physics workshop on Project X. A major component of any future program will be the development of plans for a neutrino beam from Fermilab to the proposed DUSEL laboratory. The P5 report made this a principal feature of the strategic plan for the national accelerator-based program. With this program as a keystone, Project X offers additional physics opportunities and a phased approach to long-term future facilities. We have much planning to do in the coming months. In addition to planning by individual collaborations, we will hold two general workshops per year to continue to develop the overall program.

Heart risk screening June 10
Wellness Works and Delnor-Community Hospital will offer a heart risk screening on Tuesday, June 10. The assessment will take place by scheduled appointment between 6:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. for Fermilab employees in the EOC on the ground floor of Wilson Hall. Those interested can sign up on the ES&H Web page. Participants must fast for 12 hours but can drink water.
NALWO sponsors wildlife talk
Fermilab's women's organization NALWO will sponsor "Wildlife on the Prairie," a talk by lead groundskeeper Jim Kalina at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 12. Kalina will share stories about coyotes, deer, American bison and other wildlife that have made their homes here at Fermilab. The informal talk will take place near the picnic tables at Kuhn Barn or inside the Barn if it rains. Anyone can attend. Please show photo ID to enter the laboratory.
NALWO lunch June 11
Join Fermilab's women's organization NALWO for a get-together lunch at noon on Wednesday, June 11, at Chez Leon. Meet other laboratory women, network, or just relax over a delicious meal.
