Midwest earthquake rattles Illinois, Fermilab equipment
The plot shows the results from a single Tevatron magnet tilt meter that recorded the slight back and forth motion of the magnet due to the motion of the earth during the earthquake.
On Friday, April 18, at approximately 4:37 a.m., a 5.2-magnitude earthquake shook southern Illinois. It was the second strongest quake in the area in 40 years. Its vibrations were felt across the state, including at Fermilab.
On-site seismometers recorded pre-dawn vibrations at the laboratory. Scientists said they likely would have lost the beam inside the Tevatron if the acclerator had been running.
The plot shows the slight movement of one of the Tevatron magnets tilting back and forth due to the movement of the earth at the time of the quake.

Year's first buffalo baby
The birth of the year's first buffalo, one of 10 expected calves, happened Friday. These fuzzy, feisty calves can stand within 30 minutes of their birth and start playing soon after. A typical calf weighs 30 to 40 pounds. It loses its light brown color within three months.

Filing IDES claims during second furlough period
If you filed unemployment benefit claims during the first furlough period, here are a few reminders regarding filing claims during your second furlough period.
- In order to qualify for unemployment benefits, you must file an additional claim with the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) during your second furlough week (or four consecutive days for weekly employees) online or at your local IDES office. You do not need to call the TeleServe system to certify your claim until after you have received a letter from IDES with your call-in date.
- IDES will only consider your claim if you file during your furlough week. Please note: IDES follows a Sunday-Saturday week, so you must file between Monday and Saturday of your furlough week.
- When you file your second claim, list your "hire date" as the first day you returned to work after your first furlough period.
Those interested in applying for unemployment benefits for the first time, must file a claim with IDES online or at their local IDES offices. You must serve a one-week waiting period, and may then be eligible for benefits during the next furlough period.

Foster requests more money for Fermilab

Rep. Bill Foster joined other members of the Illinois congressional delegation this week in requesting more money for Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.
In letters to the House Appropriations Committee and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Foster -- a former scientist at the Batavia lab -- urged his colleagues to include $350 million for the Department of Energy's Office of Science in a supplemental appropriations bill for 2008.
This money would restore funding cut from that office late last year, when Congress passed an omnibus appropriations bill.

Severe weather preparedness

Now that warm weather has finally arrived, you should take time to re-familiarize yourself with the proper precautions for thunderstorms, high winds, hail, lightning, tornadoes and floods. The two most important elements to severe weather preparedness are recognizing hazardous conditions and taking the appropriate protective actions.
Fermilab has a Sitewide Emergency Warning System. When the SEWS activates, those indoors will hear an alarm tone followed by an announcement of the hazardous condition and verbal instructions for what to do.
Those outdoors will hear sirens that announce tornado warnings or national emergencies. If you hear an outdoor alarm, proceed to the nearest available shelter. Observe conditions and use common sense when selecting shelter areas. Choose the best space you can get to safely. If you can't get to a designated shelter, go to a lower-level, windowless room.
If off site, you will probably hear community sirens and broadcast warnings. You can also use a weather radio that broadcasts National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are 940 transmitters throughout the United States that provide location specific information. You can set most weather radios to automatically activate each time a hazardous weather announcement occurs. The alert will sound similar to Fermilab's indoor warning system, a tone followed by an announcement of the hazardous condition and verbal instructions on how to protect yourself.

Dr. Orbach to speak at lab-wide meeting Tuesday
Dr. Raymond L. Orbach, Under Secretary for the DOE Office of Science, will speak at a laboratory-wide meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in Ramsey Auditorium. All employees and users are invited.
Dr. Orbach will discuss the budget situation, including the President's FY09 budget request. He will answer questions from the audience after his talk.

Passage over Fox River will be shut down for 16 days
From Kane County Chronicle, April 20, 2008
Drivers will lose one way to cross the Fox River as the Wilson Street bridge closes for 16 days, beginning Monday.
Emergency services are preparing, and police are urging drivers to look for other routes. While officials expect traffic congestion and delays, they hope that the problems will disappear once the work is done.
Crews will be pouring the final driving surface and installing lighting while the bridge is closed. Applying 2 inches of latex coating is the last step before the bridge's two driving and parking lanes can be used, bridge liaison Terry Heffron said. Street-lights, lane stripes and decorative details also will be put in place.
The bridge will close Monday and re-open May 6.

Computer programming course April 24
"C++ Templates and Template Metaprogramming," the third course in the current series of "Selected Topics in Computer Programming," will occur on Thursday, April 24. Aimed at programmers with C++ experience, it will deal in depth with issues related to function and class templates in modern C++ programs. Attendees will learn techniques of template-based programming and metaprogramming, as well as related new techniques from the next C++ standard.
Participants will receive TRAIN credit for the free course. Course registration is now open. Future courses will occur at two-week intervals.
