Fermilab firefighters teach children about fire safety

A Fermilab firefighter in full gear crawls past children at the Fermilab Children's Center to simulate a rescue operation.

As part of fire prevention month, Fermilab Fire Department Cmdr. Chuck Kuhn visited the laboratory's daycare center on Wednesday and did his best Darth Vader impression.

Although he and the other firefighters arrived in plain clothes and told the children the do's and don'ts of fire safety, they eventually donned fire-retardant coats, helmets, boots and air tanks.

Kuhn wants the children to know that firefighters look different when they get ready to rescue someone from a smoke-filled room than they look in most story books.

"The air tank and mask give us a clear view," said Kuhn, "But we're totally covered up so that you really can't see us."

And the air tank, Kuhn said, makes him sound just like the villain Darth Vader from the Star Wars movies.

The raspy breathing and covered face can scare children, causing them to hide from a rescuer. So Kuhn's visit to the daycare works to dispel that fear now, before the children find themselves in a fire.

The firefighters put on all of their gear and crawled past the children to show them what firefighters look and sound like during an emergency. "This way they know not to be afraid," Kuhn said. 'They know they should reach out and let us help them."

The firefighters have taught fire prevention at the daycare for the last 12 years. Kuhn said that the children's knowledge of fire safety is impressive. "A lot of them will surprise you," he said. "They know who to call, not to hide under the bed or in the closet and not to play with matches."

Exceptional Performance Recognition Award recipients

On Sept. 28, Fermilab recognized the work of 26 employees with Exceptional Performance Recognition Awards. The employees had been nominated by their divisions and sections for the awards. Fermilab Director Pier Oddone handed out the awards at a reception on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall.

"We have many dedicated employees here at Fermilab. It is a great pleasure to recognize each year some of the truly outstanding contributions they make to the laboratory," Oddone said. "These people have gone beyond their duties and accomplished things that are of great importance to our organization, making this a great laboratory."

ILC physicists build
their dream house

IRENG07 participants inspected the rollers of the SLD at SLAC.

Be it a house renovation or even a proposed particle accelerator, anyone involved in a construction project can appreciate the 1948 classic film Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy. In a memorable scene, the married couple meets with their architect, who presents them with the plans for their home. Mr. and Mrs. Blandings proceed to mark up the plans until they are no longer recognisable, turning the mere home into their dream home. Sure, there is the minor detail of the chimney going through the middle of Mrs. Blanding's sewing room, but that is the architect's problem to figure out, right?

As opposed to the Mr. and Mrs. Blandings method of taking the design of their dream house into their own hands, the ILC engineers, accelerator and detector physicists are already engaging in a dialogue (hopefully one that will prevent a chimney going through the middle of a detector). Roughly one hundred members from the ILC engineering, accelerator and detector communities started swapping information at the IRENG07 workshop that took place at SLAC in mid-September.

DOE Office of Science publishes update of landmark plan: "Facilities for the Future of Science: A Twenty-Year Outlook"

From DOE press release, Oct. 11, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science today released a comprehensive update of its landmark 2003 publication, Facilities for the Future of Science: A Twenty-Year Outlook, that shows the agency has made "significant progress" in deploying the scientific facilities and instruments that the United States needs to capture world scientific leadership, extend the frontiers of science and support the Department's missions.

When it was published four years ago, the Facilities Outlook was the first long-range facilities plan prioritized across disciplines ever issued by a government science funding agency anywhere in the world. It remains so today - and serves a model for other countries and regions that are developing roadmaps for research infrastructures.

The 2003 plan listed 28 new scientific facilities and upgrades of current facilities that will define scientific opportunities over the next 20 years in all fields of science supported by the Office of Science, including fusion energy, advanced scientific computation, materials science, biological and environmental science, high energy physics and nuclear physics. The facilities were ranked according to their scientific importance and readiness for construction, and they spanned scientific fields to ensure the U.S. retains its primacy in critical areas of science and technology well into this century.
