Fermilab Profiles in Safety

Bill Arnold - Waste Management Team

"Working closely as a team is the only way to deal with the challenges and potential hazards of safely managing Fermilab's chemical and radioactive waste."

DZero celebrates 200th paper

DZero celebrated the publication of its 200th paper, a milestone only the largest and most prolific experiments reach.

The celebration was an opportunity for the DZero collaboration to remember how far they have come. Paul Grannis, who spoke at the Sept. 26 celebration, joined the project in 1983. He said that at that time, he never imagined the project would grow as large and successful as it is today.

"We celebrated the first 100 papers in April 2001, nine years after the start of data taking," Grannis said. "The second 100 came faster, so we are gaining momentum."

The group also has gained acclaim.

This summer many of its team members received awards. Tim Scanlon received an award for outstanding doctoral thesis and Yann Coadou was given an award for outstanding contributions made by a post-doc. In addition, on Sept. 28, DZero's Jan Stark received the CNRS Media De Bronze in Grenoble, France. The French National Council for Scientific Research awards bronze medals for the first work of a promising researcher. Many recipients of CNRS honors have gone on to win Nobel prizes.

But DZero isn't taking the success too seriously. The celebration was filled with jokes about publishing papers and a pop quiz about paper facts including "How many citations are there for the most cited paper?"

U of C hosts city-wide science fair

From Chicago Maroon, Oct. 2, 2007

The University of Chicago and the Argonne and Fermi labs (Fermilab) will act as official sponsors of the 2007 Chicago Science in the City, hosting events during the two-week celebration aimed at furthering science education across the city.

"Participating in outreach like this and explaining what we do in science is a very important activity and the U of C is helping in sponsoring [Chicago Science in the City]," said Sidney Nagel, Distinguished Service Professor in physics. "Scientists should jump at every opportunity to tell people what they're doing because what we're doing is interesting, it's beautiful, and it's useful, and it's important in our daily lives and important for our future and future technology. So, if we can explain this clearly and with passion and communicate our passion to our audience, I think that can only be for the good."

A novel challenge

Sakue Yamada

ILC NewsLine presents a new column from the Research Director Sakue Yamada.

The invitation to become the newly created research director for the International Linear Collider detector design was a surprise. I have always been aware that an electron positron collider is a powerful tool for particle physics. I started my career in high energy physics in this field, and I enjoyed many exciting years. I also participated in various discussions about a future linear collider project. But that was a long time ago. In recent years, I watched from the sidelines and followed the international efforts organised to design a linear collider under the leadership of the Global Design Effort. After discussions with the ILC Steering Committee and several key physicists, I learned how far things have developed and why they introduced a Research Director.
