International flair in 2007-2008 Fermilab Arts Series

Poster from the Spanish Harlem Orchestra

Janet MacKay-Galbraith hopes that one word can capture the spirit of this year's Fermilab Arts Series: Wow.

This season's line-up features international flavor with performances from groups like the Grammy award winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra, the Creole-French party band Buckwheat Zydeco, and the Irish music group Cherish the Ladies.

Buckwheat Zydeco will headline the season's first performance, this Saturday, Sept. 15. The season will run through May. Tickets range from $16 to $30. Shows are open to the public as well as Fermilab employees. The box office phone number is (630) 840-ARTS (2787).

MacKay-Galbraith says that the Art, Lectures, and Galleries Series have a loyal following, drawing in about 8,400 people a year. Still, MacKay-Galbraith has tried to expand the audience this year by asking for input from the auditorium committee.

She handed a long list of performances to the members of the Auditorium Committee, asking them to write down which ones made them say "Oh wow" and "I would love to go see that."

Based on their input, MacKay-Galbraith drew up a list of top picks that she calls "the wow list."

At the top of that list are Barrage, Buckwheat Zydeco, Reduced Shakespeare Company, and - MacKay-Galbraith's favorite - the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, all of which will be playing at Fermilab this season.

To preview these performances, go to the Arts Series homepage. MacKay-Galbraith has put up links to videos and Web sites for all of the artists featured in this year's series.

"As soon as you play it, bam! The first chord just hits you, right out of the box," MacKay-Galbraith said, describing a YouTube video of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra performing. "If I can just get people to listen for 30 seconds, they'll buy a ticket."

Physicists solve six-decade challenge to create matter-antimatter molecules

From AFP, Sept. 12, 2007

PARIS (AFP) - Physicists in the United States announced on Wednesday that they had met a 60-year challenge to create molecules of positronium, a short-lived atom that comprises matter and antimatter.

The achievement may help the development of fusion power as well as directed-energy weapons such as gamma-ray lasers, but also spur explanations for a long-standing enigma about the Universe, they hope.

Under the standard laws of physics, for every type of ordinary-matter particle, a corresponding "antiparticle" exists.
