Buying time at Fermilab

From Kane County Chronicle, Sept. 8, 2007

BATAVIA - Young-Kee Kim believes that the team at Fermilab can find the prized Higgs boson - and the public relations boost that would accompany the discovery of the prized subatomic particle.

But the deputy director of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, as it is formally known, said the facility's main tool in the search for the Higgs - the Tevatron particle accelerator - might need a little more time.

For years, physicists working at Fermilab have watched the days tick away, drawing the facility ever nearer to the date in 2009 when the Tevatron is scheduled to cease operation.

But Kim said Friday that Fermilab recently has entered discussions to potentially grant the Tevatron - and the search for the Higgs boson at the Batavia facility - another year of life.

Safety Tip of the Week

Rx safety eyewear

Fran Gilkerson is the onsite representative for Fermilab's prescription safety eyewear vendor, Aearo Technologies.

To protect your vision at work, you may want to make sure you have up-to-date, well-fitting prescripton safety eyewear. Fran Gilkerson can help. As the onsite representative for Aero Technologies, Fermilab's prescription safety eyewear vendor, Gilkerson places orders, dispenses, and fits delivered eyewear, and takes care of repairs. You can find her on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. next to the East Wilson Hall elevators on the mezzanine level.

Procedures for obtaining prescription safety eyewear, including a copy of the request form, and an online appointment scheduler can be found here. Be sure to have an eyewear prescription that is less than a year old before scheduling your appointment. You can view available frame styles at AOSafety's Occupational Prescription Eyewear Web site.

Gilkerson offers the following advice, collected during the 30 years she has been dispensing eyewear:

  • Get an annual eye exam. Being able to see well enough to avoid accidents is a good enough reason to get one, although the detection of underlying health conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, can be even more important.
  • Electricians should never get metal frames because of the shock hazard.
  • It may take as long as two weeks to adapt to a new prescription. As you adjust, be careful since your hands and feet may not appear to be where you expect them. Pay special attention walking down stairs with your first pair of bifocals.
  • To avoid damage to your glasses, remove and clean them properly. Most frame damage comes from falling asleep with glasses on or from rapidly pulling on one temple to remove them. Most lens scratches come from cleaning by dry wiping.
