Physics Advisory Committee Report Released by Fermilab
The Fermilab Physics Advisory Committee (PAC) met from June 18-21 in Aspen, Colorado, to review the Fermilab science program. The focus of this year's annual retreat included long-term planning, more near-term projects such as NOvA, Super CDMS-25kg and various R&D efforts.
The 2007 charge to the Committee and its recommendations are available via links from the PAC webpage. These webpages are maintained by the Program Planning Office, which also maintains links to current and draft long-range schedules.
The PAC has offered insight into issues and opportunities important to the laboratory community since Fermilab's early days. It is a major source of advice to Director Pier Oddone regarding the future direction of Fermilab's experiments and programs.
"The PAC reviews the spectrum of issues facing the laboratory and can offer guidance regarding Fermilab's current programs and long-range future" said PAC Secretary Jeff Appel. "There is substance in the committee member conversations and earnestness in their efforts."
The PAC is composed of senior scientists from universities and high-energy physics laboratories in the U.S. and abroad. "The theorists and experimentalists who serve on the committee provide us with a combined wisdom that is rich in foresight and broad in vision," said Appel.

Tribute to Dave Gassman
We are a fairly disparate group of people from around the laboratory who would like to pay tribute to Dave Gassman. We are all shocked and saddened by his unexpected death.
Dave was an extremely intelligent, interesting, and clever person with an amazing memory and a great sense of humor - he was not as quiet as he seemed to be! For some of us, he was also a fellow veteran. Dave was very upbeat and positive, kind to all with a ready smile. And he always knew the answers to the most obscure crossword puzzle clues (we'll never forget Edna Ferber and the goddess Ate, thanks to Dave). And he always knew which old TV show you were talking about (want to know Beaver Cleaver's teacher's name?). And he always knew the words to all the old songs. And he always knew all the sports scores and who was traded where. And he always knew whatever you wanted to know about history, literature, geography and every other subject under the sun.
Those of us who also had a work relationship with Dave appreciated that he always just tried to help you get the job done, without being critical or obstructive.
We will miss laughing with Dave the Answer Man for a long time to come.

Is dark energy lurking in hidden spatial dimensions?
The mysterious cosmic presence called dark energy, which is accelerating the expansion of the universe, might be lurking in hidden dimensions of space. The idea would explain how these dimensions remain stable - a big problem for the unified scheme of physics called string theory.
Ever since astronomers discovered in the mid-1990s that other galaxies are accelerating away from us, physicists have struggled to explain why. Their favourite suggestion is quantum vibrations in the vacuum of space (called vacuum energy or the cosmological constant) that could produce repulsive gravity.

Face-to-face
Fermilab Director Pier Oddone addresses the Steering Group last week.
Last Monday and Tuesday the second face-to-face meeting of the Steering Group took place at Fermilab. The Steering Group, headed by Deputy Director Young-Kee Kim, is working tirelessly on a roadmap for the future development of the accelerator-based part of particle physics research in the US. The roadmap maintains the ILC as the central feature of the US plan and provides other discovery opportunities should the timeline of the ILC be stretched out for any number of reasons. In addition to the Steering Group itself, many stakeholders from the community took part in the meeting; several attended by telephone and the web. It is remarkable that in these days of instant web communications a face-to-face meeting is still so important and so enormously useful when we deal with difficult issues. Breaking bread together at Chez Leon for one of Tita's great dinners helps us to get to know each other and resolve difficulties in a friendly atmosphere.
Later in the week, in Washington DC, Deputy Director Kim presented the work of the Steering Group to the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel. She described the extensive involvement of the community, the progress made and some of the exciting ideas to come out of the study. She also emphasized that the Steering Group's production of a roadmap for the accelerator-based part of the field is a proposal to be vetted by the advisory committees, P5 and HEPAP in the usual manner. Her report was very well received by HEPAP.
The next phase of the Steering Group's work is to produce a draft report at the beginning of August that we hope will converge towards a final report by the end of that month. The roadmap will be reviewed by our Accelerator Advisory Committee in mid-August and later in the Fall by our Physics Advisory Committee. In addition, the roadmap will be broadly discussed with the community and refined as these interactions take place. Also in the Fall, P5 will start considering the proposed roadmap.

2007 GSA Triathlon
The 2007 GSA Triathlon will take place on August 11, 2007. Those interested in participating should email Mandy Rominsky as soon as possible. Labwide party on August 3
To celebrate our laboratory community and its recent achievements, the Fermi Research Alliance will host a labwide party in the Wilson Hall atrium on Friday, August 3, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The theme of the party is "World-class people, world-class research." The party will feature international snacks, beverages, music and door prizes. All Fermilab employees, users, contractors and DOE employees are invited.
