David Gassman, Fermilab's chief legal counsel

Fermilab employee David Gassman passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 5. He was 59.
Gassman was hired in August of 1992 and served 15 years as Fermilab's chief legal counsel.
Bruce Chrisman, Fermilab chief operating officer, described Gassman as very thorough and considerate, someone who took the time to try and understand the laboratory's needs and did his best to help laboratory staff accomplish their goals.
"David always gave very considered legal opinions," said Chrisman. "He will be missed."
Gassman graduated from North Central College in Naperville in 1969 and received his J.D. from Northwestern University Law School in 1974. He was a member of the Illinois Bar Association and a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Bob Betz memorial brings admirers and memories
A memorial celebration was held Saturday in honor of the life of Dr. Robert F. Betz, and his lasting influence on Fermilab and the surrounding region. Friends, family and colleagues spoke about Betz, his accomplishments and his contribution to prairie restoration both near and far.
Stephen Packard, Audubon Society, compared Betz to other naturalists such as Henry David Thoreau and John Muir while speaking during the Robert Betz memorial symposium in Ramsey Auditorium.
More than 200 people attended the reception on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall, including Bob Betz' wife, Eleanor, and former Fermilab director John Peoples.
Many of the guests took the opportunity to join members of the Betz family and walk in the Robert Betz prairie. Roads and Grounds Bob Lootens (right) gave the guests an overview of the restoration work.

Students dive into physics
BATAVIA - Although they come from countries as diverse as the Czech Republic and China, the 55 students participating in this year's Neutrino Summer School at Fermilab have one thing in common: a desire to learn more about an emerging area of physics.
"This is a good way to get the background while you're not involved in the nitty-gritty of an experiment," said Larissa Ejzak, a physics graduate student at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
The Neutrino Summer School is a first for Fermilab, said Regina Rameika, co-director of the school. Neutrinos are a type of particle that lacks an electrical charge. The name was coined by Enrico Fermi, the physicist after whom Fermilab is named. Invisible to the naked eye, neutrinos increasingly are being studied because there are questions about their mass and how they can be used in other areas of science.

Group plans midnight bike ride
Bicycle riders can pedal the night away for a cause this month.
The fourth annual Chase the Moon bike ride, which will benefit the Naperville-based Conservation Foundation, begins at 12:01 a.m. July 29. The 25-mile bike ride starts at Marmion Academy, 100 Butterfield Road, Aurora, and winds through Fermilab in Batavia.
This is not a race, and participants have the option of shortening their route if desired.

A tale of two Bobs

Last Saturday in Ramsey Auditorium we celebrated the life of Dr. Robert Betz who, along with Bob Wilson, was one of the great sculptors of the Fermilab site. We are all familiar with the impact that Wilson had on the landscape with the disposition of the site, the unusual architecture and colors, the creation of the Village and the placement of his sculptures.. But the dominant feature of the landscape today is the restored prairie that Bob Betz imagined, way ahead of his time, and that is a distinguishing feature of Fermilab and of its stewardship of the land.
Dr. Robert Betz, professor of biology and biochemistry at Northeastern Illinois University, was better known as Dr. Prairie. Well before the establishment of Fermilab, he had began a career of understanding what had been here when the first settlers came: a beautiful garden of grasses and forbs that had flourished over millennia in a yearly cycle of renewal. The founders of Chicago chose the motto Urbs in horto - City in a garden - not only as an advertisement to attract newcomers to the city but also quite true to the reality of an Illinois prairie in bloom. Less than one-thousandth part of the original prairie survives today. For many years Bob Betz had studied the remnants of prairies along railroad tracks and in cemeteries, collecting seeds and restoring prairie gardens. Last Saturday a daughter spoke of an unusual childhood with many hours spent among tombstones! Bob Betz was first to recognize and propose the use of the Fermilab site for a prairie restoration project on an unprecedented scale.
It is fun to imagine the meeting of the two ebullient Bobs that launched the Fermilab prairie, one proposing an unusual project no one had tried before and the other eager to get it done now. Over the years, Bob Betz was a mentor to the staff of Roads & Grounds at Fermilab, now graduates of "Bob Betz University" and themselves prairie ecologists. They, along with the many volunteers in Fermilab and the surrounding community, have created this magnificent prairie so that we might do Physica in horto.

Labwide party on August 3
To celebrate our international community and its achievements, the Fermi Research Alliance will host a labwide party in the Wilson Hall atrium on Friday, August 3, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The theme of the party is "World-class people, world-class research." The party will feature international snacks, beverages, music and door prizes. All Fermilab employees, users, contractors and DOE employees are invited.

Retirement Income Options Seminar
On July 11, 2007, TIAA-CREF will hold a financial education seminar. Titled "Getting Ready for Retirement," the seminar will be presented by individual consultant Chad Stein and will focus on developing financial strategies for retirement. Attendees will obtain a basic understanding of how the different financial elements interconnect (Social Security, taxes, TIAA-CREF Retirement Annuity, SRA, etc.) with their overall strategy when preparing for retirement.
