Collins seeks diversity in work, nature

Kent Collins of the Facilities Engineering Services Section helps with the picnic at the 2005 Fermilab Prairie Harvest.

As Head of the FESS Site Services Department, Kent Collins manages many of the important services that help make Fermilab a pleasant place to work. "Our department does its best to free others to do their work by providing the basic services we all expect. Basically, we try to keep life comfortable for everybody," he said.

Collins, who describes his job as "always interesting," represents several groups within FESS. An ordinary day may include work with Roads and Grounds, Janitorial Services, Wilson Hall building management, or a variety of other departments. He also helps coordinate responses to facilities and land usage inquiries from the DOE.

A member of the Fermilab community since 1990, Collins has served in a number of positions, ranging from Wilson Hall building manager to Site Building Inspector. These experiences, in conjunction with his great appreciation for the lab's rich natural environment, have led him to believe that diversity is Fermilab's strongest asset.

In addition to his regular job, Collins also serves on Fermilab's Ecological Land Management Committee. As part of the group, Collins works toward the development of a stable site ecosystem by advancing native plant and animal diversity. "We should leave the place better than we found it," he said.

Collins also emphasizes the importance of Fermilab's environmental stewardship in fostering a positive relationship with the community.

"By preserving the health and beauty of our grounds, we can be a good neighbor and encourage the continued support of our community," he said.

In his spare time, Collins enjoys being a private pilot and spending time outdoors, especially at Fermilab.

"People should really get out and see the site. Take the opportunity to stop and see what Fermilab has to offer," he said.

symmetry magazine celebrates 25th issue

The cover of symmetry's 25th issue. Hard copies of the magazine will be distributed today and next week.

Roz Chast is best known for her cartoons in The New Yorker, more than 800 of which have appeared since 1978. But she's no stranger to the sciences, having published in both The Sciences and Scientific American. For the 25th issue of symmetry, Fermilab and SLAC asked her to interpret particle physics for the cover of the magazine and to contribute a cartoon to a feature story on searches for dark energy. Enjoy!

Report of the International Cost Review of the ILC

Lucio Rossi (CERN) and Lyn Evans (CERN LHC Project Leader), who served as chair of the ILC cost review.

What could be better than Paris in springtime? Maybe having enough free time to enjoy it! Last month, many of us in the GDE went to Paris (to Orsay to be precise) for our long anticipated International Cost Review of our ILC Reference Design and plans for the future. The International Linear Collider Steering Committee and the Funding Agencies for Large Colliders jointly sponsored the cost review, each selecting members to sit on the review committee. This committee of senior international reviewers held a very intensive review from 23 to 25 May. The review report was released last week in advance of the coming FALC meeting in Rome on 11 July. The result of the review was very gratifying regarding the methodology we are using, our efforts for cost reduction, and the RDR costing we have accomplished. It also presents a number of valuable suggestions for the next steps.

CERN announces new start-up schedule for world's most powerful particle accelerator

Geneva -- Speaking at the 142nd session of the CERN Council today, the Organization's Director General Robert Aymar announced that the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will start up in May 2008, taking the first steps towards studying physics at a new high-energy frontier. A low-energy run originally scheduled for this year has been dropped as the result of a number of minor delays accumulated over the final months of LHC installation and commissioning, coupled with the failure in March of a pressure test in one of the machine's components.

DASTOW events capture imaginations of all ages

A girl tries to capture insects as part of DASTOW's Insect Sweeping Prairie Tour event Thursday.

There were times yesterday when Fermilab resembled more of an amusement park than a physics laboratory. That's because Fermilab's annual Daughters and Sons to Work Day attracted an audience of over 300 children and high school students, all here to learn about the discoveries and developments of science at Fermilab.

The morning kicked off with Mr. Freeze's popular science show, where Particle Physics Division's Jerry Zimmerman wowed the audience with liquid nitrogen blasts and exciting demonstrations of cryogenic science. "The confetti projectile launch was the most awesome thing of the whole day," said Katie Schram, daughter of AD's Henry Schram.

After the show were One-on-One sessions designed to give an inside look into the lives of women in science. Liana Nicklaus, whose father is an engineer in the Accelerator Division, was one of the lucky visitors who met with Elizabeth Freeland, a guest scientist in the Particle Physics Division. Nicklaus, a sophomore at IMSA, got a thorough introduction to Freeland's work.

"Elizabeth explained to me a lot about what she did at Fermilab," said Nicklaus. "It was really interesting to find out how all the different levels play into this research. Whether you are more interested in computer programming, equations, or physics, there are jobs in all different fields." Nicklaus was one of many high school students who took advantage of the one-on-one activity. The Physics of Sports and the Light and Color Demo were other favorite activities of the older students.

This year's Insect Sweeping and Prairie Tours were a hit among kids, who collected and identified insects from Fermilab's well-loved landscape. Another favorite was the buffalo pasture tour with herdsman John Plese, who entertained the crowd with his bison stories. "This is a great learning experience for children of all ages," said event organizer Mary Ann Stowell. "We look forward to next year's DASTOW."

The group poster will be available today in the Office of Communication (formerly Public Affairs), on the first floor of Wilson Hall, and at Visual Media Services, located at the ground floor, northwest entrance of Wilson Hall.
