Collins seeks diversity in work, nature

As Head of the FESS Site Services Department, Kent Collins manages many of the important services that help make Fermilab a pleasant place to work. "Our department does its best to free others to do their work by providing the basic services we all expect. Basically, we try to keep life comfortable for everybody," he said.
Collins, who describes his job as "always interesting," represents several groups within FESS. An ordinary day may include work with Roads and Grounds, Janitorial Services, Wilson Hall building management, or a variety of other departments. He also helps coordinate responses to facilities and land usage inquiries from the DOE.
A member of the Fermilab community since 1990, Collins has served in a number of positions, ranging from Wilson Hall building manager to Site Building Inspector. These experiences, in conjunction with his great appreciation for the lab's rich natural environment, have led him to believe that diversity is Fermilab's strongest asset.
In addition to his regular job, Collins also serves on Fermilab's Ecological Land Management Committee. As part of the group, Collins works toward the development of a stable site ecosystem by advancing native plant and animal diversity. "We should leave the place better than we found it," he said.
Collins also emphasizes the importance of Fermilab's environmental stewardship in fostering a positive relationship with the community.
"By preserving the health and beauty of our grounds, we can be a good neighbor and encourage the continued support of our community," he said.
In his spare time, Collins enjoys being a private pilot and spending time outdoors, especially at Fermilab.
"People should really get out and see the site. Take the opportunity to stop and see what Fermilab has to offer," he said.
