Ross, Kephart conduct ILC
Town Meeting at Noon in 1W

Capping off an ILC twin-bill today, Technical Division head Marc Ross will lead a Town Meeting for Fermilab employees and users at Noon in One West. Ross serves as the chair of the EDR task force, which is drawn from the three regions of the Global Design Effort, and the ILC Executive Committee.

The task force is seeking feedback on how the EDR effort should be organized and what special issues might be involved for FNAL. Ross will offer a presentation on the ILC Engineering Design Report plans, then he and FNAL task force member Bob Kephart will host a discussion on the issues special to FNAL during the EDR era.

The immediate goal of the task force is to have a preliminary report ready for the meeting at DESY from May 30 to June 2, followed by a complete report to the ILCSC in August. The report will contain recommendations for the EDR project structure and work packages. The long range goals of the task force include maintaining momentum from the Reference Design Report phase; growing the scope and commitment of the international ILC community; meeting technical requirements of governments to proceed with the project; and coordinating the worldwide R&D program.

The town hall meeting is preceded by a talk on the Calorimetry Challenge for ILC Detectors, presented by Fermilab's Adam Para at 11 a.m. in One West.

Rep. Nick Lampson to speak from DC at Users' Meeting

Rep. Nick Lampson

U.S. Representative Nick Lampson (22 nd CD-Texas), chair of the House Science Committee's Subcommittee on Energy, will offer the opening address in Ramsey Auditorium for the Fermilab Annual Users’ Meeting at 9:10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 6 followed by a question-and-answer session.

Rep. Lampson, who recently underwent bypass surgery, will appear by video from Washington, DC. His district includes the Johnson Space Center in Houston, and Rep. Lampson is expected to comment on directions for basic research and high energy physics in particular.

A former high school science teacher first elected to Congress in 1996, Rep. Lampson was cosponsor of H.R 362, the “10,000 Teachers, 10 Million Minds” Science and Math Scholarship Act. The bill, which passed the House on April 24, provides funding for additional math and science teachers and initiatives in grades K to 12. The legislation was authored by Rep. Bart Gordon (6 th CD-Tennessee), chair of the House Committee on Science and Technology.

“As we examine our educational funding needs, we consistently recognize the importance of math and sciences funding for our school children,” said Rep. Lampson in a statement following the bill’s passage. “This important bill ensures our nation will continue to train our future leaders in the most competitive global industries. . . As a former science teacher myself, I know firsthand the importance of a well-rounded education, and how studying the sciences can broaden a student’s mind and strengthen academic performance.”

Users’ Executive Committee chair Sacha Kopp, a MINOS collaborator from the University of Texas at Austin, regards Rep. Lampson’s background is especially well-suited for this audience.

“On behalf of UEC,” Kopp said, “we are delighted that Rep. Lampson will speak to us from first-hand experience as a science teacher. He is also a strong proponent for innovation through research and education, to help keep the United States at the forefront of scientific discovery and technology.”

Users are encouraged to register online for the Annual Meeting, which takes place June 6-7.

Bug may cause slowdown

The Particle Physics Division’s Computer Support group has seen a recent increase of computer performance problems, including sluggishness after logging in or restarting a Windows computer, apparent system lockup or freeze during scan updates from the Microsoft updates page and SVCHOST service set at 100 percent, staying maxed out for as long as 20 minutes.

These problems are not isolated to Fermilab and are related to a known bug. Microsoft is attempting to fix the issue. More information about the performance problem can be found here: MS Article 916089 and a fix can be found here: MS Fix. The fix does not completely fix the problem, but improves system performance. A permanent fix is expected out this month.

SciTech annual dinner pays tribute to Mir

AURORA -- The days are counting down for fans to meet with SciTech Hands On Museum's visionary force, Dr. Ronen Mir.

Museum supporters and friends will honor Mir at Sunday's annual benefit dinner and silent auction at Walter Payton's Roundhouse Complex.

Fans will be able to meet with a force of the Chicago Bears, too -- Dan Hampton, a legendary defensive lineman from the 1985 Super Bowl champions.

LQCD and persistence

Today's column is written by Vicky White, head of the Computing Division.

Vicky White

"Energy and persistence conquer all things."
-- Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790)

During the DOE annual review of the US Lattice Quantum ChromoDynamics computing facility, held at Jefferson lab on Monday, we learned great things about the science being conducted using the special computing facilities at Brookhaven Lab, Jefferson Lab and Fermilab. Fermilab plays a major role in this success, from managing the overall facility project, to working on the science, and everything in between -- including a dedicated team of people in Computing Division who keep the 1,245 systems running efficiently at the Lattice Computing Facility.

It is almost ten years now since I first become involved with the LQCD theorists. In 1998 I began a tour of duty at DOE where the program Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) was just starting up. It was a great experience to be involved in launching SciDAC, working with Thom Dunning, now head of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.

What struck me during the review was the importance of being persistent in pursuing our long term and far reaching goals. Of course, not everything dreamed of in 1998 has come to pass for LQCD, or for many of the projects sponsored under SciDAC. It has taken a long time, in the case of LQCD, to see how building a nationwide collaboration, working across disciplines (high energy physics, nuclear physics and computer science), constructing common software and building special facilities, in the end all come together in significant scientific results. The theorists and computing people have worked persistently together. We all know that building accelerators and detectors takes a great deal of time and planning. We tend to forget that, whenever the scale of what we hope to accomplish can no longer be attained in small groups or by individuals, then it will take a long time and require much careful justification.

So hats off to the U.S. Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics community at the labs and universities; and to Bob Sugar, the Chair of the Executive Committee since the beginning, for his leadership and persistence. The next ten years should be even more interesting than the last ten.
