Fermilab to highlight recycling and restoration efforts at Expo

Fermilab will highlight the lab's electronic recycling program and prairie restoration efforts at the EnvironExpo on Saturday, April 21.

A 50-inch plasma TV, free DVDs and a pile of junk. It will be a mixture of high tech and low tech at Fermilab's display at the second annual Batavia EnvironExpo scheduled for Saturday, April 21 at Batavia City Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year's theme: "Working Today for a Better Tomorrow: Reducing Waste and Carbon Dioxide."

"We'll present the lab as a good neighbor, as an environmentally responsible neighbor," said Eric Mieland, an environmental specialist at the lab. "That's one of the primary reasons we want to do this."

Fermilab has award-winning programs in electronics recycling and prairie restoration. Both will be highlighted at the expo, with a TV slideshow about ecological land management; a poster illustrating the studies by Argonne Lab researchers on the Fermilab prairies' ability to store carbon; free copies of Fermilab's prairie DVD ("Part and Parcel of Nature"), and a scuplture of old electronics parts held together with cable cords and glue, assembled by Wayne Braun of Business Services' Property-Inventory Control. EnvironExpo coordinator Ann Drover, who expects about 1500 people to attend, said she is excited about the lab's display. "I know it's going to attract a lot of visitors," she said.

Fermilab is ahead of the "e-cycling" curve. In 2005, Fermilab sent 90,000 pounds of electronics to commercial recyclers as a way to minimize effects on the environment. And Fermilab's model prairie restoration project is the perfect spot to study plants' ability to store carbon in their roots.

"Ecosystems grab carbon out of the air and sequester it underground to get it out of the atmosphere," said Rod Walton, the lab's ecologist. This could help slow global warming. "We hope to show people that connection between restored prairie and the rest of the environment," Walton said.

Drover described Fermilab as a model of sustainability. "We are so lucky to have Fermilab," she said. "When [Batavia] becomes more green, we can take on some of that know-how."

Laboratory Releases Physics Advisory Committee Report

The Fermilab Physics Advisory Committee (PAC) met at Fermilab March 29-31 to review aspects of the Fermilab science program. Topics included the Longer Term Program, the Neutrino Physics Program, the Tevatron Collider Program and the Particle Astrophysics Program. The charge to the Committee and its comments and recommendations are now available via links from the PAC webpage.

Since Fermilab's early days, PAC has offered insight into issues and opportunities important to the laboratory community. It is a major source of advice to Director Pier Oddone regarding the direction of Fermilab's experiments and programs. As Oddone noted in his "Director's Corner" last week, "The meeting of the PAC was, as usual, intellectually stimulating and extremely useful in developing our physics program." He added "A great asset in the PAC are our European and Japanese colleagues who help us to see our program and our planning activities through the eyes of our colleagues abroad."

The PAC is composed of senior scientists from universities and high-energy physics laboratories in the US and abroad.

Physicists Designing Detector For International Particle Collider

John Hauptman stood before an international gathering of particle physicists and announced he had another idea. One that was different. One that was simpler. And best of all, one that he was sure would work.

Pandemic flu planning

Nations with confirmed cases of H5N1 avian influenza. Click on image for expanded view.

The H5N1 virus has spread through bird populations in 50 Asian, European and African nations. In addition, of the 291 people who have contracted the disease, 59 percent have died. Essentially all human cases resulted from direct contact with birds and most cases occurred in Southeast Asia. If the H5N1 virus mutates to become easily transmissible between people, a flu pandemic will likely result. This would disrupt the normal day-to-day activities and services that we take for granted.

Knowing what to expect, how to prepare and where to find information can help minimize the impact of a pandemic on you and your family, should such an event occur. This information can be found at DOE's Office of Health, Safety and Security website, as well as the US government's pandemic flu website.

There are a number of things you can do to protect yourself until infection control programs are put in place by various units of government. These include:

Practicing good health habits: Get flu shots, wash hands often, cover coughs/sneezes, and avoid others if sick.

Preparing for foreign travel: Keep vaccinations up to date. Avoid contact with poultry and poultry secretions. Monitor your health for 10 days after return. If you develop flu-like symptoms, contact your physician and avoid travel except to seek care.

Users' Office closings
The Users' Office will be closed on Thursday, April 19, and Friday, April 20. Please renew IDs or contact the Users' Officer before the closing dates. To renew your ID while the office is closed, visit the Key &ID office for a visitor's pass and access card for site access and shift work. New employees may receive a visitor's pass only from the Key & ID office for site access. For car rentals, please contact Enrique Lopez at 847-707-3643 or 630-840-4037. In an emergency, you may contact Borys Jurkiw at 630-840-4363 or by email.

LoopFest VI
Fermilab will host LoopFest VI from Monday, April 16 through Wednesday, April 18. The event is sponsored by Fermilab and by the American Linear Collider Physics Working Group on higher-order calculations at a future international linear e+e- Collider (ILC). LoopFest aims to provide a forum to coordinate activities focused on the theoretical challenges from the LHC and the ultra-high experimental precision of a future ILC. The LoopFest VI program is available online.

Professional Development
New classes are always being added to the professional development schedule. For the most up-to-date course offerings, go to the web page.
