As part of the transition to the new contract, FRA has committed to
providing an orientation to all Fermilab employees. The information to be
presented at the orientation sessions is similar to that presented at the
Town Hall meetings last week. For this reason, DOE-FSO has agreed that
those employees who attended the Town Hall meetings on Tuesday, November
7, 2006 are not required to attend the orientation.
For the rest, you can meet this requirement in one of two ways: 1. Sign up and attend one of the FRA Orientation sessions that will be presented in 1-West. You can sign up online. 2. Watch the streaming video presentation on-line. Print off and sign an attendance sheet and mail to MS 119.
If you have already viewed the streaming video presentation, simply print
off an attendance sheet, sign it, and mail to ES&H Training, MS 119.

| 5th Annual Veterans Day Celebration at Fermilab | |||

Friday, November 10, Fermilab Veterans held their 5th annual Veterans Day Luncheon at Kuhn Barn. "Veteran's Day celebrations are important for people to remember why we fly the American flag," said Joe Morgan, senior buyer in Fermilab Procurement.
The lunch included a memorial for Jed Brown, former associate director, who died this summer and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors on September 25. Brown was a retired Brigadier General for the US Army. Greg Gilbert, operations and maintenance, gave a brief history of Veterans Day and guest speaker Paul Linden retold experiences of flying B29 planes.
Fermilab has around 150 employees who are affiliated with the veterans group; about half of this group served in Vietnam. To learn more about the history of Veterans Day visit the US Department of Veterans' Affairs Website.

A committee charged to study the hiring and retaining of women and minorities on Fermilab's scientific staff will soon report to Director Oddone. The committee, chaired by Cathy Newman Holmes, will recommend practices designed to improve a welcoming work environment. Before finalizing the report, the committee seeks comment from the Fermilab community.
Both commendation and complaints are helpful to the committee. "It's important that we know what is good so we can keep it, and what is bad so we can try to fix it," said Young-Kee Kim deputy director of Fermilab. This committee and report is part of Fermilab's continuing effort to recruit and maintain a diverse staff. "Fermilab cares deeply about this issue," said Kim, "we are examining ourselves."

The supervisory skills needed to motivate workers for ES&H excellence are the same as those for other responsibilities. Here are some reminders to sharpen your leadership skills and manage for improved safety in the workplace. Responsibilities - Ask workers where they would like more responsibility and authority and give it to them (within the boundaries of good judgment). Expectations - Clearly communicate expected deliverables. Do not assume that expectations are clear to others just because they are clear to you. Motivation - Encourage and recognize initiative and self-directed action. Processes - Ask workers how they would redesign their work processes to make them more efficient and effective. Come to agreement and then let them do it. Measure results together. Recognition - Show your appreciation for the results and contributions of others. Do not take the efforts of others for granted. |
