| Women needed for volleyball | ||

Winter is fast descending on the plains of Illinois, but that is no reason to start hibernating. The Fermilab Winter Volleyball League thinks there is no better time to play, especially if you are female.
Fermilab's recreational volleyball league needs women--not because they're lonely, but to foster a welcoming, co-ed culture in the league. The league has decided each team of six must have at least two female players or they cannot compete in league play-offs. "We have had a shortage of women as long as I can remember," said Sergey Los, league organizer. Female volleyball player Natalia Ratnikova, of CMS, feels that part of the problem recruiting women in the past has been intimidation. Men are larger, competitive and sometimes impatient with new players. "We've had discussions about creating a good atmosphere," said Ratnikova, "where new people can learn, where we help them and build them up." Ratnikova, who feels these discussions have been successful, regularly tries to get her friends to join. "It's a lot of fun," she said. "I work inside at a computer all day, so it's nice to get some winter exercise. We play indoors so you are not dependent on the weather. And, since it is a co-ed league, women progress in their skills much faster since they are playing with stronger players. And, being a team sport, you have to communicate well with your team. Your success depends on everyone. You get greater satisfaction than, say, riding a bike by yourself."

Greetings to you all from Baghdad. Life here continues to provide wonderful advances and terrible setbacks, all in an amazing day's work. While the stories will surely feel endless and energetic once I return and we share a cold beverage together, please accept this picture that the group snapped just a few days ago.
This is atop the building that I work at most days (when not out on the streets). It is situated in central Baghdad, not far from the Headquarters for the Ministry of Interior. We are located in the Red Zone, which keeps things extremely tense daily. We actually practiced this picture downstairs prior to taking it on the roof, to minimize our "uncovered" time. Thankfully, it was incident free.
I appreciate all of your support and look forward to safely returning home. Take care of yourselves.

In China, the ILC-IHEP group was founded in December 2005 and is led by Jie Gao, who is the only GDE member in China and an ILC regional leader in damping ring studies. About thirty members have been working on beam dynamics, damping rings and superconducting cavities. In the ILC-IHEP group, only young students and researchers are working on superconducting cavities. "We need more participation from all generations," Gao said.

SLAC Today, October 20: Ground Breaking New Science at SLAC
Menlo Park, CA-The Department of Energy's Stanford Linear Accelerator Center officially broke ground today for the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), the world's first X-ray free-electron laser. Scheduled for completion in 2009, the LCLS will produce ultra-fast, ultra-short pulses of X-rays a billion times brighter than any other source on earth.
