| Curtis Danner wins Director's Award for education exhibits | |

Deputy Director Young-Kee Kim presented employee Curtis Danner with the Director's Award Monday evening for his outstanding efforts as a Fermilab education volunteer. "Thank you for your important work on the Leon Lederman Center exhibits," said Kim, presenting Danner with a plaque and a check for $1,000. Kim also thanked Danner on behalf of Director Pier Oddone, who was not able to attend because he was giving a presentation to the Scientific Policy Committee at CERN.
Danner was chosen from a pool of six nominees, including Ronald Miksa, Suzanne Weber, Jerry Zimmerman, Muzaffer Atac and Donald Lincoln. "This is not their main job. They put in extra hours because they care deeply for this program," said Kim. "I'd like to thank every one of our volunteers."
Education head Marge Bardeen also addressed the group: "You are the ones who make [the Education Office] look good to just about anyone who wants to look," she said. Bardeen emphasized volunteer contributions to school outreach programs, last year's successful open house that drew over 2,000 visitors and creative efforts for exhibits at the Lederman Science Center. "You are willing to be role models," she said, "and to show young people that not all scientists have white coats and hair sticking out all over."

Temporary restrictions transferring disk drives

If your hard drive breaks down and you try to send it away to have it repaired, don't be surprised if PREP or the property office sends it back to you. They are just following a new rule.
According to a recent DOE memo, no hard disk drive or other magnetic computer storage media or device should be sold, donated or transferred to an off-site contractor or other organization for disposal. Most importantly in our environment, this prohibits the property office from exchanging disk drives with vendors
It is not clear how long this restriction will be in effect. There are efforts to negotiate formal and informal agreements with vendors that would allow existing repair and warranty agreements, knowing that at some point in the future the exchange drives will be returned. INFN Press Release, October 13, 2006: Chemical reaction between matter and antimatter realized for the first time: it brings about the formation of protonium Matter and antimatter particles run into each other and they annihilate into a small flash of energy: it happened at the first light of the Universe and it happens every day in the particles accelerators throughout the world. The international collaboration Athena, that involves Genoa, Pavia and Brescia Infn researchers, has yet been able to induce for the first time a chemical reaction between matter and antimatter that produced protonium: it is formed of one hydrogen ion and one anti-hydrogen ion, that is to say a proton and an antiproton. The result has been published today Friday, October 13, by Physical Review Letters.

This is an exciting time of transition for the Technical Division. In the coming years, the division will turn away from a primary focus on superconducting magnet technology to focus on both superconducting magnets and superconducting RF cavities.
As a student in the late 1970s, I was amazed at the way Fermilab embraced and tackled the development of superconducting magnets. Of course, the technology pioneered here has since spread across the globe. At the division picnic in mid-September, I was impressed to hear the long list of magnet projects successfully commissioned in the last year. With superconducting RF, as with magnets 25 years ago, we want to create the best performance. For the last 15 years, superconducting RF cavity accelerating field performance has improved steadily to the point where it is the technology of choice for a wide range of new accelerators, such as the DESY XFEL, the Spallation Neutron Source and the ILC. This tremendous accomplishment was coordinated by the TESLA Collaboration, centered at DESY, in Germany. From the start, Fermilab has been directly involved in this collaboration, through the leadership of Helen Edwards and support of our staff. With the surge of global interest in the ILC, it is time to take the technology the next step, and the ILC Global Design Effort has developed a research and development plan for this task. Our plan involves the TESLA Technology Collaboration, of course, since this collaboration includes the world's experts. We can learn from them, they can evaluate our program, and they can participate in our work. The challenge we face, this time around, is to expand our technical horizons to tackle a new technology, and to expand our critical partnerships. These two tasks must be done at the same time in order to take the next step and get the ILC off to a running start. |
