Last letter from a soldier
On Friday, July 28, Jed Brown, former Fermilab associate director, died at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. We highly value Jed's years of service to Fermilab, a laboratory that he loved. Jed's wife, Jean, sent me this letter that he wrote to his classmates at West Point, to be sent after his death. I think he would be pleased to share it with all of you in the Fermilab community.
--Pier Oddone

On 28 July 2006, at the age of 63, Jed Brown, Brigadier General, United States Army, Retired, turned in his mess kit and was honorably discharged from the ranks of the living.

He wishes to thank his dearly departed parents Ethel and Victor Brown for bringing him into this world and raising him, West Point for preparing him for life and sending him on his way, and the U.S. Army for providing him an opportunity to be all he could be. Jed also thanks a considerable number of dear and true friends and loved ones who, with their sincere love and affection, have done so much to make his sojourn on earth such a pleasant and enjoyable one, particularly his daughters Deborah and Suzanne and his beloved wife Jean. He certainly hopes to meet them all again in the foreseeable future at a happy reunion in the great beyond. His final wishes are for God to bless his family, friends, classmates and comrades in arms, and for God to bless America.

Gerald C. Brown
Brigadier General
United States Army, Retired

If you wish to sign a book in memory of Jed Brown, please visit the second floor crossover of Wilson Hall near the west windows. The book, to be presented to Brown's wife, will be available for signing now through August 25. Burial will take place September 25 at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. The time of burial will be announced in a future issue of Fermilab Today.

Nature, August 2, 2006:
Particle physics: A finer constant

For the first time in a decade, the precision of the fine-structure constant - central to understanding the electromagnetic force - has improved. But even greater accuracy is required to test new physics.

How does the colour of a rose relate to the hardness of oak? To physicists, both result from electromagnetism, an interaction whose strength is encoded in one pure number - the fine-structure constant. Appropriately for something introduced at the dawn of quantum mechanics, the fine-structure constant is denoted by the Greek letter alpha.

Conventional Facilities and Siting group well represented at VLCW06
The Conventional Facilities and Siting Group at VLCW06: Standing L-R: Vic Kuchler, Jean-Luc Baldy (CERN), Fred Asiri (SLAC), Lee Hammond (FNAL), Tom Lackowski (FNAL), Masami Tanaka (KEK), Gerry Aarons (SLAC), Jerry Leibfritz (FNAL), Clay Corvin (SLAC), John Pedersen (CERN) Kneeling L-R: Michael Poehler (CERN), Martin Gastal (CERN), Maurice Ball (FNAL), Emil Huedem (FNAL), Atsushi Enomoto (KEK).
Fifteen members dedicated to conventional facilities and siting for the International Linear Collider participated in the Vancouver Linear Collider Workshop 2006 - a record number for the group. Prior to the workshop through their weekly videoconferences, the three group leaders, Jean-Luc Baldy of CERN, Vic Kuchler of Fermilab and Atsushi Enomoto of KEK, encouraged everyone to attend the meeting in Vancouver. The outcome resulted in participants from Fermilab, SLAC, CERN, KEK and JINR.

"There are enormous benefits to having everyone come face to face and participate with the other area systems and with their points of contact," Kuchler said. "These formal and informal discussions are essential to the progress that we have been able to make so far."

Hatha Yoga Classes
Join Fermilab's next 8-week session of Hatha yoga classes and see why this class is our most successful. The classes are held in the auditorium from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, August 22 through October 9. The cost for this session is $80.00. Registration can be made in the Recreation Office or, if using a credit card, by phone at x5427 or x2548. Membership to the Recreation Facility is not required.

Fermi Singers go off site to perform
The Fermi singers will perform at the Batavia Farmer's Market on August 5, between 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The market is held on Water Street (between Wilson and First Streets) in downtown Batavia. They will also perfrom at the Art In Your Eye Fine Art Show and Festival on August 12 at the Riverwalk (Houston St., between N. Island Ave and N. Water Street) in Batavia. You can catch them on the Peg Bond stage at 9:30 a.m.

GSA triathlon Saturday
The GSA's annual Fermilab triathlon will be held Saturday, August 5, at 8am. The triathlon consists of 800m swimming, 20Km biking and 5km running. For more information, check the triathlon webpage or email gsa_officers@fnal.gov with additional questions.

Prairie Quadrat Program
The Lederman Science Center still has openings for the Prairie Quadrat program. Get out and learn about the prairie's natural diversity while helping real ecology researchers. "The plants are lusher and denser than ever," said Education's Mary Hawthorne. "People have enjoyed this so much. We've had a number of repeat participants." This is the last chance of the year to take part; outings for the August 15, 24 and 30 are still available. Find out more and sign up here.

Professional Development
