Community Task Force begins ILC preparations

Members of Fermilab's Community Task Force met Tuesday night to discuss community outreach principles as the lab pursues the proposed ILC. "They always provide invaluable insight into the community and who we should be talking to," said consultant Doug Sarno, of the Perspectives Group in Alexandria, Virginia. In March 2004, with Sarno's assistance, Fermilab convened the task force to prepare policy suggestions for informing and involving neighbors and other stakeholders on issues of mutual concern. When tritium was found in the surface water on site late in 2005, the group and the procedures it had developed provided Fermilab with invaluable support in addressing the issue.

The group has recommended forming a new task force to help guide community involvement with the ILC's early design phase. The duration of this new task force, and the selection of its membership, were discussed at length at Tuesday's meeting. As a next step, Sarno and Judy Jackson, head of Fermilab Public Affairs, will design a convening process for consideration by the current task force, which will help to identify prospective members for the ILC group. "Success for the new task force means two things," said Sarno. "One, it must be a group of open-minded people who can give valuable advice based upon all the information. Two, the group must be credible to the community as a whole. We're not looking for a bunch of 'yes' men."

The group agreed that Fermilab's outreach priorities must go beyond forming a second task force, directly addressing all relevant organizations, groups and constituencies, and allowing all voices with questions or concerns to be heard. Illustrating the proposed collider's benefits for the community will be pivotal. Based on these recommendations, Sarno, Jackson and other Fermilab ILC communicators will formulate a plan for community involvement. An updated plan will be presented to this group at its next meeting. "Their input was extremely useful," said Jackson. "They underlined the importance of Fermilab being transparent and inclusive of the community through out this process, which is exactly what we intend to do."

In closing out last week's Vancouver Linear Collider Workshop 2006, Global Design Effort Director Barry Barish declared that the Reference Design Report (RDR) and Detector Concept Report (DCR) are on track to be released in draft form in early 2007. "We have seen a lot of costing information, and we are still on track," he said.

Thinking Big--again

BATAVIA - The ill-fated Superconducting Super Collider was a federal science project large enough to warrant such an unwieldy name.

The 54-mile, oval-shaped atom smasher would have been one of the largest things ever constructed. If it had been built at Fermilab, the underground tunnel would have encircled central Kane County, down to Aurora, reaching as far west as Kaneville - prompting a grass-roots group to fight the project.

Physics Bus will come to Fermilab Sunday, July 30
The Physics Bus at the Very Large Array, New Mexico.
What runs on vegetable oil and has an insatiable thirst for physics? It's the Physics Bus! A Science Museum on wheels, the Physics Bus will visit Fermilab this Sunday around noon.

The bus usually travels to schools across the country to teach kids about physics, but will make a pit stop Sunday at Fermilab. Anyone interested in physics outreach can stop by to check out their colorful vegetable-oil-fueled bus and some of their physics demonstrations. Watch for the bus near Wilson Hall on Sunday around noon when they roll in from a cross-country road trip.

A message for landlovers: Don't ignore the siren's song

July 20, 2006
Dear FT:
This morning at about 4 am the tornado sirens went off in the village. Until then I thought I knew how to react to such an alarm--that is, move to the nearest shelter. Fact is that on the emergency radios provided here the voice said it was only a thunderstorm warning. So I called the security to ask what to do and they said the siren was played in response to the thunderstorm: they said just to stay away from the windows, no need to move to the shelter areas.

I was going to start making phone calls this morning to find out how one should behave in such a situation ... but I thought you could do better and write an article where you mention this morning's alarm and explain all different weather alarms of Fermilab and how to react to them.

I think the fire alarms in the village houses are supposed to go off simultaneously to the outside siren as a sign of tornado but I'm not sure... many uncertainties.

Editor's response:
Thank you for your email, Leonardo. Fermilab Today will explain how the sitewide emergency warning system works in Monday's Safety Tip.
