Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman wants an efficiently-run DOE, but he is even more focused on a safely run DOE. "I'm quite concerned about our recent safety statistics," Bodman said Wednesday afternoon in his DOE-wide address from the Forrestal Building in Washington, DC. "In my view, one accident or incident is one too many."
Hoping for a combined outcome of safety and efficiency, Bodman said he is considering the merger of DOE's Environment, Safety and Health Office with the Office of Security and Safety Performance Assurance. Referring to what he called a necessary "shift of mindset," Bodman continued: "It's the responsibility of all of us to operate the Department in a safe and secure way." Bodman's remarks to all DOE federal and contract employees were videostreamed throughout the lab and into Ramsey Auditorium. Bodman emphasized the need for increased collaboration and "knocking down the stovepiping," by which he meant allowing decisions to be made across traditional organizational lines. He cited an organizational initiative that would grant line authority across departmental lines to DOE's Chief Financial Officer, Chief Information Officer, Chief of the Office of Human Capital, General Counsel and Director of Public Affairs.
Bodman also announced future changes in pension and medical benefits for employees of contractors such as URA, which manages Fermilab under contract for DOE's Office of Science. The result would be a "two-tiered" structure, with new benefits in place for contractors' new employees hired after the spring of 2007; current employees would continue with present benefits. Bodman said the change was intended to "bring contractors' pensions and benefits in line with other Federal employees." Bodman closed his prepared remarks by offering his email address (the.secretary@hq.doe.gov), saying: "I hope everybody will feel free to contact me."

As we move toward an era where international relationships are increasingly crucial, Deputy Director-designate Young-Kee Kim's plan is simple: If you build, they will come.
"If we are going to bring the International Linear Collider to Fermilab, we need to build a formal structure to keep internationalism here," said Kim. To help achieve such structure, the Fermilab directorate recently instituted a fellowship to bring international scientists to Fermilab. Each year, the new International Fellows Program will bring about six students, postdocs and scientists from foreign institutions to work at Fermilab for up to three years. During the initial years, the program will have two main objectives: it will seek talented physicists to maximize results pouring out of the Tevatron, and it will help Fermilab and the community further engage in ILC efforts. "This is a win-win situation,' said Fermilab Director Pier Oddone. "The scholars who join Fermilab will have access to the most exciting physics happening here now. And eventually, they will participate in ILC R&D. The fellowship also establishes many new connections, with both people and institutions worldwide."

INFN Press Release, June 13, 2006 Pamela goes to Space: it will explore antimatter and dark matter to unravel the mysteries of the universe Searching for antimatter and dark matter in Space: this is Pamela's mission. Pamela will be launched into orbit on June 15th from the cosmodrome of Baikonur, in Kazakhstan. The launch will take place at 11.00 am local time ( 6.00 am Italian time).
Pamela, (Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics) will stay in Space for at least three years, on a quasi-polar elliptic orbit between 300 and 600 kilometres from the ground. Pamela is the result of a collaboration among Russian research institutes, Russian Space Agency and the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics, with the participation of Italian Space Agency and the contribution of German and Swedish space agencies and universities.

The first part of the contribution aimed to take full advantage of the group's expertise in fast electronics controls, which they gained from CDF experiment, among others. Like several laboratories working on the ILC, the team dedicates part of their studies to beam stabilisation. "The contribution effort in this area is huge because the parameter is critical," said Bellettini. "We have to align electron and positron beams to a few nanometres while they run through over thousand 10 m long cryomodules which weigh tonnes."
