The committee working to form a 15-year plan for US participation in global efforts in particle physics, also known as EPP2010, will issue a final release of its public report today at 2:30 p.m. EDT at the Keck Center of The National Academies in Washington, D.C. Earlier this month, physicists from about 50 institutions across the country congregated in Lincoln, Nebraska, for an annual meeting of the US portion of the CMS collaboration. With the Large Hadron Collider scheduled to begin running next summer, said Boaz Klima of the LHC Physics Center (LPC) at Fermilab, members of CMS are accelerating the pace of their work. "Everything looks a lot more realistic now. We have to be ready for physics on day one," Klima said.
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS), and its sister ATLAS, are the two largest scientific collaborations in history, each project involving nearly 3000 physicists and engineers from more than 30 countries. The colossal CMS detector, already being assembled at CERN, will be 21 meters long and 16 meters in diameter-and an order of magnitude more complex than any of today's detectors.
A Remote Operations Center (ROC) on the 11th floor of Wilson Hall will allow physicists at Fermilab to monitor online data collection at CERN from halfway across the world. US CMS physicists offered to take the CERN "owl shifts" here at Fermilab, since midnight in Switzerland is a more reasonable 5 PM in Illinois. A clock above the entrance to the ROC counts off the days, hours, minutes, and seconds until "first collisions" on July 1, 2007. It may be over a year away, but in terms of particle physics, it is right around the corner. "This is the beginning of getting together, integrating tremendous efforts which have been in place for many years, and assembling an experiment that can produce physics on the time scale of that clock. It's a daunting task," Klima said.

The Beacon News April 25, 2006: Fermilab invites families to potluck BATAVIA — A special reunion takes place each year at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia. However, it is not for the scientists, the researchers, or the lab workers who have converged on the site since 1967. Long before the state gave the land over to science, farm families lived on this massive acreage. On May 6, those families and their descendants are invited back for an old-fashioned Prairie Potluck lunch, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Kuhn Barn.
"We love this picnic because the older generation can share their stories, in the original setting, with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren," said Fermi archivist Adrienne Kolb. About 100 people usually attend, she said.

| Plant a tree for Earth Day | ||

| With Earth Day just behind us, it's time to plant trees at Fermilab.
Bring a shovel, boots and gloves to the West Wilson guard house tomorrow at 11:30 a.m., and Roads and Grounds will bring the rest. There will be 60 to 75 trees and shrubs to plant around the site with a hotdog lunch to follow. For more information, contact becker@fnal.gov or call x3303.

| Health and Fitness Day 2006: "Making Fitness Fun" | ||

| On May 17, Fermilab and Wellness Works will join thousands of organizations across the country to celebrate National Employee Health & Fitness Day--the largest worksite health and fitness observance in the U.S.
This year's event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Ring Road. Participants may sign in, pick up a game ticket and grab a bottle of water at A1, then walk, run, rollerblade, or bike around the ring. Stations along the way will provide fitness activities, prizes and cheers of encouragement. At the end, stop off at the prize table to see if you have a winning ticket.
Come join the fun on May 17; the division or section with the largest percentage of participation will win the traveling trophy (last year's winner was Lab Services). Rain date will be May 18.

Fundraiser for John LaFleur The City of Batavia will host a fundraising event for the family of John LaFleur on May 13 from 2-8 p.m. LaFleur was a Fermilab electrician who passed away March 26 as a result of complications from a brain tumor. He is survived by a wife and three children and had not worked at Fermilab long enough before his death to receive a pension. Tickets are available through Greg Gilbert, x6835 or gilbert@fnal.gov.
