| NALWO hosts Indian cooking demonstration at Chez Leon | ||

| Last year, it was cornbread and blueberry-and-buffalo stew. This year, it was vegetable pulav and tandoori chicken as the National Accelerator Laboratory Women's Organization (NALWO) ran its annual three-hour cooking demonstration yesterday. Participants crowded into the User's Center kitchen to watch volunteers Shraddha Dube, Mady Newfield, Madhumita Paul, and Selitha Raja prepare dozens of Indian dishes--pickled lemons, mango chutney, vegetable fritters, and home-made yogurt; curries, koftas, and at least three kinds of dessert. Viewers were given photocopied packets of all the recipes so they could follow along, but one observer said that watching the demonstrators create the dishes was invaluable to her.
"[The demonstrators] did such a good job of explaining," said Rose Moore, NALWO Board President. NALWO sponsors many social and cultural events at Fermilab, including trips to zoos and museums, potlucks in the Village barn, and English classes. Some people think that NALWO events are exclusively for the wives of physicists, said Moore. But the organization's events are for the entire female Fermilab community, for employees and visitors alike, especially those who live on-site and do not often meet people outside of the Village. "It's my idea to have events where we can get together and meet people from other cultures, other places in the world," Moore said. "We're just happy that so many people came and enjoyed it."
The next NALWO event is a spring tea on Thursday, May 25. Teatime is from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Barbara Oddone's home onsite. More information can be found here. |
| U.S. particle physics report to be released April 26 |

A new report from the National Academies' National Research Council, Revealing The Hidden Nature Of Space And Time: Charting The Course For Elementary Particle Physics, examines the future role of the United States in this research and the investments required to help our nation lead efforts in the field. The report will be released at a one-hour public briefing on Wednesday, April 26 at 2:30 p.m. EST. More information can be found on the National Academies Website. The Daily Herald April 24, 2006: State aims to accelerate funding to Fermilab In a bid to gain world favor as a leader in physics research and capture the revenue that follows, Illinois officials Friday said they are eyeing a $3 million project for Fermilab. State officials unveiled the proposed project and vowed support for Fermilab in Batavia and Argonne National Laboratory in southeastern DuPage County at a press conference in Chicago. The two federal research laboratories also signed an agreement cementing their expanded partnership for accelerator experiments.
The proposed creation of the Illinois Accelerator Research Center at Fermilab's Batavia campus is included in Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's 2007 capital budget request. The $3 million grant still must be approved by the General Assembly.

| Proclamations usually begin with several "whereases," each stating one of the facts that lead to the proclamation. Governor Rod Blagojevich's proclamation of "Particle Accelerator Day" in Illinois is no exception. Five "whereases" that we could not have written better ourselves set the stage for the proclamation, recognizing particle accelerators not only as the tools for the discovery of the fundamental nature of the universe, but also recognizing the many benefits that particle accelerators have brought to society in important fields of research and in many applications.
The last "whereas" recognizes the partnership of Argonne National Laboratory and Fermilab, memorialized by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the day of the Proclamation. Grand dreams need grand alliances to be realized. The ILC is such a dream, and it will take many institutions across the world to bring it to fruition. We are working with collegues across the world to make these global partnerships, but at the core, if we are to host the ILC in Northern Illinois, we need a strong center. Fermilab and Argonne with their complementary strengths, their deep knowledge of accelerators, and their commitment to scientific and operational excellence can provide such a center. But even more importantly, to site the ILC in Northern Illinois we need the support of the State government, the local communities and our Washington representatives. I have been in Illinois less than one year and in this brief period I have seen absolutely outstanding support for our laboratory and its dreams for the future. I do not know any other State that has supported its laboratories so well. We at the laboratories are fortunate indeed. So maybe one more "whereas" is appropriate. Whereas the State of Illinois is unparalleled in the nation in the support of its laboratories, we at the laboratories will do our utmost to deserve the trust that it has placed on us. |

Fermilab will celebrate the contributions of its administrative professionals Wednesday, April 26 in 1 West. Dr. Stephen Lundin will present "FISH! Extravaganza."
A Continental breakfast will be served at 9:30 a.m. in 1 North and the program will start at 10:00 a.m. All administrative and clerical employees are invited to attend.
