HEPAP's "Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel" (P5) will meet today and tomorrow
at Fermilab to discuss the proposed
projects for neutrino physics and for dark matter detection.
Open sessions will be held in 1 West and streaming video will be available through Visual Media Services.

| It's easy to blame the geese, but humans, too, may be partially responsible for the spread of zebra mussels in Fermilab's water cooling system. Voracious breeders and tenacious hitchhikers, zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) have invaded the midwest freshwater system, and have even managed to break into the ponds at Fermilab, attaching themselves to anything that is dark and moist and clogging the water pipes that cool the equipment.
Zebra mussels may have found their way to Fermilab in the first place by means of a fisherman who inadvertently brought a little bit of water in his bait bucket from an infested lake. "I think people need to understand that it's not just the birds and the system itself that is responsible for the spread of the zebra mussels," said FESS engineer Anne Lucietto. Zebra mussel babies--called "veligers"--are microscopic, allowing them to hitchhike from lake to lake on ducks and geese, toy boats and fishing poles.
Fermilab users, visitors, and employees should take care not to contaminate other lakes inadvertently. Rinse thoroughly any equipment that has touched the lake water, preferably with hot or chlorinated water. And fishermen should make sure that they empty their bait buckets of water completely.

From Chicago Sun-Times, April 17, 2006: Fermilab's rite of spring: baby bison It's a high-tech lab that seeks to unlock the secrets of the future, but at this time of year the far west suburban campus offers scenes that seem to have drifted in from the distant past. Bison calves hover near their mothers' sides before venturing out on wobbly legs to prance on the prairie. It is birthing season at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Batavia. "Some people get stressed out during the birthing season -- I really like it," said John Plese, Fermilab's chief herdsman. "You can see how happy they are. They play like puppies."
The bison calves are a rite of spring at Fermilab, as well as a symbol and main attraction in a place where scientists from around the world are breaking new frontiers in the realm of particle physics.

It was a great program! For nearly five hours we heard presentations by distinguished experts and researchers from academia and state and federal government agencies on many aspects of severe weather storms, weather predictions, storm simulations, the system of alerts, videos and photos taken during tornadoes and hail storms, the hazards and injuries to be expected and detailed analysis of some of the most awesome tornados in history that occurred in this state. For us coming from mild California, it was an eye opener and a serious education. Before hearing Tom and his group of experts, I may have been inclined to regard a severe weather warning as over-rated. Not any longer. Tom Skilling, Chief Meteorologist from WGN-TV/Chicago Tribune is an excellent producer and host. He is ebullient and enthusiastic; weather is his calling. We have been very fortunate at Fermilab that Tom presents his educational program yearly for our benefit and the benefit of the surrounding communities. Tom makes this program possible with the help of our own Fermilab folks in Media Services, Security and Buildings. These remarkable programs have become a tradition. Fermilab has hosted the programs each year for a quarter of a century. If you have not yet attended one of these programs, I cannot think of a better education on severe weather and tornadoes in Illinois--something not only worth learning about in its own right, but also important for your safety and the safety of your family. In the meantime, beware: April has the highest incidence of tornados in this part of the country. Learn where your tornado shelter is! |
