Energy Secretary to visit Fermilab Friday, April 7
Bodman
Secretary of Energy Samuel Wright Bodman will visit Fermilab on Friday morning, April 7. After a brief tour of the lab, he will hold an All-Hands meeting in Ramsey Auditorium at 11:00 a.m. All Fermilab employees are encouraged to attend.

A special thanks to Mr. Freeze from Pack 372
Mr Freeze
Fermilab engineer Jerry Zimmerman performed for a packed cub-scout crowd in January. In his spare time, Zimmermann makes appearances as Mr. Freeze, showcasing cryogenics principles for kids.
Cub Scout Pack 372 of Orland Park would like to thank Mr. Freeze (Jerry Zimmerman) for an outstanding performance at the pack's monthly meeting on Friday, January 20, teaching them all about cryogenics. The scouts, and their parents, watched in amazement throughout the entire presentation, with comments like: "This was the best Pack meeting ever!" and "Who would have thought that science could be so much fun?"

In the News
FYI: AIP Bulletin of Science Policy News
April 4, 2006:

Good Days on Capitol Hill for Ray Orbach
Ray Orbach has completed testifying before House and Senate appropriators about the 14.1% requested budget increase for the Department of Energy's Office of Science. During two morning hearings last week before House and Senate Energy and Water Development Subcommittee appropriators, Director Orbach heard much praise and little or no criticism about the FY 2007 request. While these hearings are not money in the bank, they are positive signs about the receptivity of appropriators to the request.

House Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman David Hobson (R-OH) began his hearing, which was devoted exclusively to the Office of Science, by saying "In general, I'm a strong supporter of basic research and I give [Energy] Secretary [Samuel] Bodman and Dr. Orbach credit for bringing about this healthy increase in the science budget." Hobson continued, "The Secretary deserves recognition for making some hard choices within an overall budget for the Department of Energy. It remains essentially flat for ‘07. I know that others may not be happy with the other programs that the Secretary chose to cut in order to provide for the Office of Science increase, but I respect the Secretary's willingness to make such tradeoffs. . . . I also want to give Dr. Orbach credit for instituting a long range planning process that lends credibility to the proposed science budget for ‘07. Starting with a twenty-year outlook for DOE science facilities, the Office of Science went on to prepare business plans for each of its ten science laboratories and then used all that information to prepare a five-year budget plan for the Office of Science."

Science of Good and Evil, lecture Friday, April 7
Which came first, the moral or the myth? That's the question Skeptic magazine publisher
Shermer
Michael Shermer
and Scientific American columnist Michael Shermer will discuss "The Science of Good and Evil" in a special lecture on Friday, April 7 at 4 p.m. in Ramsey Auditorium. His lecture will cover the most fundamental questions we can ask about our relationship with the universe: What is the nature of evil? Does justice exist beyond the social order? Why do bad things happen to good people?

As in his columns, Shermer applies science principles and methods to these perplexing questions to seek solutions. "The take-home message is that science is the best tool ever devised for understanding how the world works, and we should apply it wherever we can," Shermer said.

As founder of the Skeptic Society, Shermer is even skeptical of skeptics. "The advantage [of being a skeptic] is that I think you're more in touch with the real world more connected to reality," Shermer said. "The disadvantages," he added, laughing, "are that it makes you more in touch with reality. It's hard to hold wishful fantasies that may not be true."

Although he frequently lectures to non-science groups, Shermer says it is always refreshing to speak to "science people." "It's nice to have a group of friendly folks from my camp to talk to," said Shermer. "And Fermilab is one of the great centers of science on the planet, so what could be cooler than that?"
