| Young-Kee Kim is Named Lab's New Deputy Director |

| As Fermilab's new Deputy Director, Young-Kee Kim sees a critical assignment for the lab that now holds a central focus in world-wide high-energy physics. "We will search in every corner to find new physics," she said. "The Tevatron has the best potential for making discoveries." Her overall goals: "To keep the lab a great place and a safe place to work, a great place for science, and a great place for the public that supports us."
Kim will take on her new role as Deputy Director on July 1. Fermilab Director Pier Oddone made the announcement at Friday afternoon's all-hands meeting in Ramsey Auditorium, lauding Kim for the scope of her experience, her high regard within the international community, her organizational abilities, and her high-energy personality.
"I met Young-Kee on the first day she arrived at Berkeley Lab as a postdoc [in 1990]," Oddone recalled. "I was the Deputy Director then, and she popped into my office and told me all the things we were doing wrong and how they should be corrected. She had a brilliant career there. She really stirred up her department and got people thinking again. I'm very excited about this appointment."

Fermilab Director Pier Oddone offered a "State of the Lab"
Among concerns for the future, Oddone said the support of Office of Science Director Ray Orbach for the proposed ILC was "very significant." He explained that while the Tevatron is the HEP facility with "the greatest discovery potential over the next three years," the lab has also been able to make changes devoting 10 percent of resources to ILC efforts in FY06. He said ILC efforts had represented one percent of lab efforts in FY04.
Addressing what he termed "Citizens' Concerns" about the lab, Oddone added his own serious concern that no projects have been approved by DOE beyond 2009, when the Tevatron is scheduled to cease operations. He also said that if the competitive bidding for the lab's management contract results in a change from URA at the end of the year, standard procedures assure that everyone except senior management would have a job, with equal benefits. In describing an upcoming retreat by senior managers to consider organizational restructuring, he firmly emphasized that there would be no consideration of Reductions in Force (RIFs). A new email address tothedirector@fnal.gov has been set up for employee suggestions on the lab's administrative structure.

Summer Housing Requests
The Fermilab Housing Office is now taking requests for houses, apartments, and dormitory rooms for the summer of 2006. Since there will be a large influx of experimenters, and requests are anticipated to be in excess of our available facilities, you are urged to submit your request for reservations to the Housing Office by Wednesday, March 1, 2006.
