Young-Kee Kim is Named
Lab's New Deputy Director
|
|
CDF co-spokesperson Young-Kee Kim is Fermilab's new Deputy Director. (Click image for larger version.) |
|
As Fermilab's new Deputy Director, Young-Kee Kim sees a critical assignment for the lab that now holds a central focus in world-wide high-energy physics. "We will search in every corner to find new physics," she said. "The Tevatron has the best potential for making discoveries." Her overall goals: "To keep the lab a great place and a safe place to work, a great place for science, and a great place for the public that supports us."
Kim will take on her new role as Deputy Director on July 1. Fermilab Director Pier Oddone made the announcement at Friday afternoon's all-hands meeting in Ramsey Auditorium, lauding Kim for the scope of her experience, her high regard within the international community, her organizational abilities, and her high-energy personality.
"I met Young-Kee on the first day she arrived at Berkeley Lab as a postdoc [in 1990]," Oddone recalled. "I was the Deputy Director then, and she popped into my office and told me all the things we were doing wrong and how they should be corrected. She had a brilliant career there. She really stirred up her department and got people thinking again. I'm very excited about this appointment."

Luminosity Tops List In
State of the Lab Message
|
Fermilab Director Pier Oddone offered a "State of the Lab"
|
Pier Oddone |
message at Friday's All-Hands meeting, citing strong performances during 2005 in Tevatron luminosity; the MINOS experiment; e-cooling for the Recycler; astrophysics, theory and instrumentation; records in safety; and an "Outstanding" rating from DOE in both science and operations.
Among concerns for the future, Oddone said the support of Office of Science Director Ray Orbach for the proposed ILC was "very significant." He explained that while the Tevatron is the HEP facility with "the greatest discovery potential over the next three years," the lab has also been able to make changes devoting 10 percent of resources to ILC efforts in FY06. He said ILC efforts had represented one percent of lab efforts in FY04.
Addressing what he termed "Citizens' Concerns" about the lab, Oddone added his own serious concern that no projects have been approved by DOE beyond 2009, when the Tevatron is scheduled to cease operations. He also said that if the competitive bidding for the lab's management contract results in a change from URA at the end of the year, standard procedures assure that everyone except senior management would have a job, with equal benefits. In describing an upcoming retreat by senior managers to consider organizational restructuring, he firmly emphasized that there would be no consideration of Reductions in Force (RIFs). A new email address tothedirector@fnal.gov has been set up for employee suggestions on the lab's administrative structure.

From The Hindu (online edition of India's national newspaper)
January 21, 2006:
India must concentrate on pure research: scientist
KOZHIKODE: India needs to focus more on pure research in addition to giving emphasis to applied research such as Information Technology if major scientific breakthroughs are to be made in the future, according to Rajendran Raja, India-born U.S. scientist of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Illinois.

Radiation Limits for Minors
|
|
These pocket dosimeters are used to monitor radiation at Fermilab.
|
Given Fermilab's commitment to education, it is not unusual to encounter persons under the age of 18 at the Lab. Though hands-on experiences are highly desirable, we must not forget that special ES&H requirements may apply to this group. With regard to radiation exposure, minors are considered to be members of the public. As such, their annual dose limit is 100 mrem (i.e., 50 times lower than the limit for adult radiation workers).
The following additional radiation precautions apply to all persons under 18 years of age at Fermilab:
- The prior approval of the ES&H Section Head is required before they may enter a posted radiation area or any other radiological area.
- They may not enter radiation areas where the dose rate exceeds 10 mrem/hr.
- They must carry a pocket dosimeter as well as a TLD badge when entering any radiation area. Supervisors must keep a daily dosimeter log that is monitored by the local ES&H organization.
- If there is a potential to receive more than 10 mrem in a year, they must receive special radiation safety training that is approved by the ES&H Section Head.
For additional information regarding requirements for minors in radiation areas see Fermilab Radiological Control Manual Article 931.
