From BBC News, January 3, 2006:
Energizing the quest for 'big theory'

"We are at a point where experiments must guide us, we cannot make progress without them," explains Jim Virdee, a particle physicist at Imperial College London.

"We must wait for the data to speak."

Over a coffee in the lobby of building 40 at Cern, the sprawling experimental facility situated on the Swiss-French border, Professor Virdee says physics has reached a critical juncture.

Patch Available for Microsoft Windows Flaw
width="220"
A recent flaw has been discovered that affects Microsoft Windows referred to as the wmf vulnerability. This flaw permits an attacker to gain control of your system when certain types of image files are displayed. A patch was released by Microsoft on Thursday, 1/5 and is being deployed onsite. This is a high risk vulnerability; other labs have already reported infected systems. Current reports have found this attack to be delivered not only in email attachments, instant messaging applications and malicious web pages, but also through images on legitimate websites that allow users to freely post messages on message boards, blogs and other community websites.

To be safe until the official Microsoft patch is installed, ensure that your antivirus software is up to date and the signatures are updated frequently throughout the day as new variants of this flaw are constantly being discovered. Also, don't open HTML emails from unknown senders and be cautious when visiting unknown websites or websites which house community forums. Symptoms of infection vary because the exploit allows arbitrary code to be executed. Please see your local system administrators if you have any questions or believe you may have been infected.
