State Officials Visit Fermilab

The International Linear Collider presents not only a great opportunity for Fermilab, but also for the local community and the State of Illinois. This is the message that Fermilab director Pier Oddone shared with Jack Lavin, director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (IDCEO). Lavin, his Chief of Staff, Kristi Lafleur, and Chris Meister, Managing Director, Legislative Affairs, visited Fermilab on November 29. They came to the lab to receive more information on a proposal that Fermilab had sent to the State of Illinois for funding. Fermilab submitted its proposal for the Illinois Accelerator Research Center at Fermilab in early November. The new building would provide laboratory and office space for visiting scientists, students and industrial partners, strengthening Fermilab's and Argonne's links to Illinois universities and industry. It would provide infrastructure for development and testing of key accelerator components, making Illinois national laboratories the technology center for future accelerators, from the ILC to a proton driver to the Rare Isotope Accelerator to the upgrade of Argonne's Advanced Photon Source. The projected economic benefits to Illinois as the host site for these accelerator projects are significant.
After the lunch meeting, the IDCEO delegation received a brief tour of the viewing area on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall, the CDF assembly area and control room as well as the LHC magnet production facility at the Technical Division.

From The Toronto Star, December 4, 2005: Looking for God in a Busted Particle A quantum of distinguished Canadian physicists jabbers away in awe, craning over slender railings for a better look at a giant's Meccano set. Below them, in an activity akin to building a ship in a bottle, five storeys of complex electronics and metal parts are being assembled piece by piece with a clockmaker's precision in a cavern 100 metres beneath the surface of the Swiss countryside.
Technicians tethered to safety harnesses inch their way along metal gantries, connecting thousands of wires and cables as they go. When complete, the device will weigh 7,000 tonnes and stretch 46 metres, half again as long as an adult blue whale.

Fermilab's Machine Shop
Shines the Light on Safety

Employees in the Technical Division's Machine Shop gathered last Friday to eat pizza and celebrate 951 days without a DART case. During the gathering, each employee was presented with a Fermilab miniature flashlight as a token of gratitude. "We're really proud of these guys," said Charles Matthews, the Machine Shop superintendent. "So we wanted to reward them with pizza and a tool they could use to remain safe." Just before lunch, Matthews, along with the Machine Shop's supervisor Lou Ramirez and weld shop supervisor Roger Hiller, addressed the group. "The Machine Shop has had an excellent record," said Matthews. "But I don't want you to concentrate on records. I want each of you to focus on your own personal safety as well as that of your co-workers." Matthews reminded workers not to try to catch falling objects, to always remove metal burrs from items before taking them from the cut shop, and think about what might go wrong before starting any project. Hiller said that 38 percent of all workplace injuries involve the hands, 24 percent involve a blade, and 12 percent involve a power tool, so it's often the tasks that seem "second nature" that are dangerous.
Once pizza had been served, Matthews complimented his team. "I'm always proud of these guys," he said. "This is hard work and it can be dangerous, which really highlights their achievement."
