Physics and computer science technology at Fermilab and SLAC was on display last month at the Supercomputing 2005 (SC|05) conference in Seattle, Washington. For the fifth year in a row, Fermilab and SLAC combined forces to present a joint exhibit highlighting the relationship between computing, networking and high-energy physics research. Many people from both laboratories spent months preparing and planning for the exhibit, and more than 30 traveled to SC|05 from November 12 to 18.
"This was our fifth year presenting a joint Fermilab/SLAC booth at Supercomputing, and it was another successful exhibit," said Ruth Pordes from the Computing Division. "This year we showcased science that uses distributed computing technology." The exhibit was based around the Open Science Grid, a distributed computing collaboration in which scientists from Fermilab, SLAC and many other institutions participate. Through posters, interactive demonstrations and presentations, the exhibit showcased scientific applications, network research and grid computing at both labs.
Fermilab and SLAC researchers also participated in a team entry in the Bandwidth Challenge, a contest that challenged scientists and networking engineers to create the best techniques for using vast amounts of data and showcasing it on advanced networks. The team, led by Caltech, transferred high-energy physics data at a rate of over 130 gigabits per second to win the challenge for the third year in a row. The booth was rounded out by an exhibit on QuarkNet, a Fermilab-led high energy physics education project for high school students and teachers.

Batavia, IL and Menlo Park, CA-Researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford Linear Accelerator Center recently joined an international team in shattering the world network speed record. To capture first place in the SC|05 Bandwidth Challenge, the team of high energy physicists, computer scientists and network engineers led by the California Institute of Technology transferred physics data at a rate of over 150 gigabits per second--equivalent to downloading over 130 DVD movies in one minute.

University of Chicago Press Release: December 5, 2005: New Views of Universe attracting scientists to Chicago Dec. 9-13: Meeting will honor influential University of Chicago cosmologist David Schramm, inaugurate Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics Scientists will puzzle over the physics of the beginning of the universe, a mysterious force called dark energy that works against gravity, and many other cosmic mysteries at the University of Chicago’s New Views of the Universe symposium Dec. 9 to 13.
More than 200 scientists, students and journalists have registered for the symposium, which will be held from Dec. 9 to 13 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Chicago. The meeting will be the inaugural symposium of the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics at the University of Chicago.

Grad Students to Drive
Across Desert for Charity

What do you call three Fermilab grad students who pile into a broken-down 1987 Renault 5 and attempt to drive it 3,500 miles through minefields, the Sahara Desert and much of West Africa? Crazy? Maybe. But more appropriately: philanthropists. As part of the Plymouth-Banjul Challenge, Matt Leslie and Simon Waschke, of CDF, and James Monk, of DZero, hope to raise 3,000 pounds (more than 5,000 dollars) for SOS Children, a charity that provides food, medicine and practical help for African children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic. As Team Gila Monsters, the grad students will leave Britain on December 26 for Banjul, The Gambia, in West Africa.
The team members, from the universities of Glasgow, Manchester and Oxford, met at Fermilab two years ago. "We decided to do it mainly because it sounded like a real adventure - it's hard to get that kind of experience," Leslie said. "We know it's not completely insane because it's been done before, but it's still difficult enough to make it exciting." Cars used for the journey cannot cost more than 100 pounds and fundraiser participants only can spend 15 pounds on repairs. With oil leaks, bald tires and two-wheel drive, the Renault is hardly suitable for the desert trek, but the team "won't abandon the car without a fight," Leslie said. If they reach Banjul, the car will be auctioned and the proceeds donated to Gambian charities.
The team is seeking sponsors to donate time and parts for fixing their ride, as well as donations to meet their fundraising goal. "Other than that, we are preparing by taking the approach most academics would - research," Leslie said. "We've been reading books like 'Sahara Overland,' brushing up on our French and learning far more about West Africa than we ever thought we would."
