Way to Say 'Thank You'

A Veteran's Day observance will be held next Friday, November 11, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Kuhn Barn to honor those who have served in the United States armed forces. "It's a day to honor the men and women who put on the nation's uniforms and went forth to do whatever needed to be done to serve our country," said Associate Director for Operations Support Jed Brown, one of the event organizers, who served in the Army for 30 years. "All veterans made a lot of sacrifices. I'm glad we're having a Veteran's Day event at Fermilab to say thank you."
The keynote speaker will be Major Paul Owen, the Deputy Commander for the Chicago District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Owen entered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1990 and has served in Germany and Iraq and helped with Hurricane Katrina relief in New Orleans. He's also been assigned to several United States military bases and served as an assistant professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, where he taught introductory college physics including Newtonian mechanics and electricity and magnetism.
"He should be a great guest speaker," said Brown, adding that the event also is about those who made the ultimate sacrifice. "On Veteran's Day, your thoughts go back to the guys and gals who didn't survive. Those memories stay with you forever." Roast beef sandwiches, mostacolli and drinks will be provided. From Nature Online, November 3, 2005 Astronomy: Light on a dark place The sharpest images ever taken of matter around the probable black hole at the centre of our Galaxy bring us within grasp of a crucial test of general relativity — a picture of the black hole's 'point of no return'. Ever since its discovery in 1974, a strange source of radio waves in the constellation of Sagittarius has been suspected of flagging the presence of a massive black hole at the centre of our Galaxy. On page 62 of this issue, Shen et al. report the highest-resolution images yet of this source, Sgr A*. These observations provide strong evidence that Sgr A* is indeed a black hole, and afford a glimpse of the behaviour of the matter that is about to flow into it. They are also a further step towards attaining an image of the shadow around the edge of a black hole, a powerful and classic test of the general theory of relativity.
Black holes are perhaps the most exotic objects to impinge on the cosmic consciousness. They are formed when matter such as that from a dying massive star collapses in calamitously under its own gravity, forming a region of space in which the gravitational field is so strong that it swallows all matter and radiation that come near it. Delineating this region is the event horizon: the point of no return, beyond which no matter or light can ever escape.
