A few weeks ago, Fermilab Today reported on the new federal standard for badges (HSPD-12) for federal employees and contractors. In a memorandum issued on October 13, 2005, the Deputy Secretary of Energy Clay Sell clarified the application of the federal standard to the Department of Energy. At this time, Fermilab employees, users and contractors are not subject to HSPD-12.
The DOE memo explains that "the mandatory applicability of HSPD-12 and its associated processes shall apply to all DOE Federal employees, all contractor employees that have either an L or Q security clearance, and to all uncleared contractor employees servicing the DOE Headquarters complex. … Program offices may, at their discretion and based on a risk analysis, subsequently determine that additional uncleared contractor(s) will need an 'identity' credential and be subject to HSPD-12."
Because no clearance is required to access Fermilab, the federal standard is not mandatory for Fermilab employees, users and contractors. The implementation of HSPD-12 at Fermilab has been suspended.

The PowerPoint presentation is ready and the projector queued up as Mike Albrow waits for his audience's attention. In two days, he has to address a group of worldwide scientists about CDF physics. But for now his attention is on the crowd sitting in front of him - the 24 eighth-graders in Kristi Szum's science class. Albrow, of CDF, made the trip to Gregory Middle School in Naperville on Tuesday as part of the Education Office's classroom physics program. In honor of the World Year of Physics, more than 60 Fermilab volunteers are visiting local classrooms to spread their knowledge. They hope to make physics presentations to more than 10,000 students by year's end.
Using a pitch fork to demonstrate the Doppler Effect and ball bearings and an elastic sheet to show the warping of spacetime, Albrow gave a presentation titled "Space, Time and Einstein." It's one of the nine topics physicists can pick from, including a session on cryogenics and another on light and color. "I like the challenge of trying to explain some of these difficult ideas to kids," said Albrow, who has visited five classrooms this year. "You have to think especially hard about how to present and how to be accurate. And some of them have the most interesting questions." Tuesday's class was no exception. A sample of the grilling: "If there's a black hole in the middle of the galaxy, would we eventually be sucked into it?" "What do you know about strings?" Eighth-grader Mike Gorrell asked about the NuMI beamline. "The visit was interesting," he said. "It cleared up anything that was confusing."

Shutdown Begins March 1 The 14-week shutdown of the Fermilab accelerator complex is scheduled to begin on March 1. A draft schedule on how the shutdown will affect the experiments at the lab is available online. Fermilab Today will provide updates in the future.
