Shoemobile Approaches
Safety One Foot at a Time
|
|
The shoemobile gets ready for buisiness. (Click on image to see inside the trailer.)
|
|
It looks like a simple silver trailer, but it's more like a shoe store on wheels. Mike Sitarz pulls his metal trailer, better known among Fermilab employees as the "shoemobile," behind the Technical Division industrial buildings at 8 a.m. every Tuesday. He stays until 4 p.m., fitting employees with safety shoes required for their jobs.
Sitarz's store, Knippen Shoes, located in Wheaton, is contracted by the Environmental Safety & Health Section to make the weekly trip to Fermilab. Inside the carpeted trailer, stacks of cardboard boxes line the walls and fitting chairs await customers. Sitarz, who's been making the trip to Fermilab for 11 years, carries about 350 pairs of shoes, ranging from Sketchers to Red Wings.
Employees required to wear special work shoes are given a footwear request signed by their supervisor detailing the safety features that are needed. The most common requirements are for nonathletic, leather, ankle-high shoes with steel-toe protection, Sitarz said. Other jobs just require shoes with the capacity to protect those who work with electrical energy. Fermilab will pay up to $85 per pair, and if an employee chooses a pair over that limit, they're expected to cover the additional cost.
On what Sitarz calls the "free wall" about 40 pairs of shoes are displayed, all $85 or less. The hardest part is finding the pair that fits best, Sitarz said. "Steel-toed shoes are even more difficult because if you don't get the proper size, they'll kill you," he said. Employees don't have to purchase their shoes from Sitarz, but that's often the easiest option, said Rafael Coll, who coordinates Fermilab's safety shoe program. "It's convenient because people don't have to miss work," he said. "If they go out to town, it could take a couple hours. But here, they're in and out in less than a half hour."

URA a Sponsor for NOVA's Einstein Program on Oct. 11
|
Universities Research Association, Inc., is a participating sponsor of Tuesday's NOVA dramatization Einstein's Big Idea: The story behind the world's most famous equation, telecast nationally by PBS. The program is based on the book by David Bodanis, E=mc²: A biography of the world's most famous equation. URA will join a list of sponsors including the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Google, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the American Physical Society. NOVA is telecast in the Chicago area by WTTW-TV Channel 11. You can also check out the Quantum Diaries Blog to find out more about this NOVA program. Once there, you can ask a Quantum Diarist any Einstein-related question.

Dark Matter – One Mystery Solved
Until recently cosmologists could not explain why elliptical galaxies did not appear to have dark matter haloes surrounding them, which is known to exist in other types of galaxies. Analyzing data from a simulation performed on one of the most advanced supercomputers in the world, an Israeli cosmologist showed that the existing model of elliptical galaxies was wrong, proving that dark matter was there all along.

Use Candles with Care
|
|
The graph above shows the dramatic increase in household candle fires from 1990 to 2001. (Data from the NFPA; click on image for larger version.)
|
October 9-15 is Fire Prevention Week. This year's theme is "Use Candles with Care." The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that 85 percent of fire deaths occur in the home. Though candles account for only 5 percent of home fire deaths, the number of candle fires has been increasing with time.
Half of home candle fires result from combustible materials coming too close to candles and 18 percent occur when candles are left unattended. Half start in the bedroom and falling asleep is a factor in 25 percent of deaths. Bedding is the most common item to ignite, followed by furniture, then curtains. Children playing with candles are an invitation for tragedy. Faced with fire, children often hide in a closet or under a bed with fatal results.
Here are some tips for using candles safely:
- Keep candles away from things that can catch fire. This includes flammable liquids, clothing, books and curtains.
- Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or going to sleep.
- Keep children and pets away from candles.
- Use sturdy candle holders. Holders should be tip-resistant, non-combustible and able to hold the volume of dripped wax.
The Fermilab Fire Department will visit the Childrens' Center on the morning of October 13 to give their annual presentation on fire safety. From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fire Department vehicles will be on display in front of Wilson Hall. Firefighters will be present to demonstrate fire rescue equipment and to answer questions.
