There's a new face leading Fermilab Today. Siri Steiner has replaced Elizabeth Clements as the editor of the daily online newsletter. Clements, who has led Fermilab Today since it launched in July 2003, is now the communications director for the International Linear Collider Americas/Global Design Effort and is based in Fermilab's Public Affairs office. "Siri really had the right kind of enthusiastic attitude," Clements said about her successor, who began August 22. "This job requires somebody who is not afraid of deadlines and pressure and people standing behind you making changes. Siri just seemed like she wanted this challenge and she wanted to have fun with it." Steiner received her master's degree in science writing from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of California Berkeley. She's interned at Popular Science, written science curriculum for the Galef Institute and served as an editorial assistant at Tikkun magazine in San Francisco. Steiner grew up in southern California, her thirst for science beginning as a child who asked questions adults couldn't answer. "I just love how it feels when you break down an idea," Steiner said. "The only way to really understand something difficult is to write it for someone else who doesn't understand it."
Steiner describes Fermilab as "more than I imagined," a place where she has much to learn, but also much to give. "I'm excited about getting to know everybody here and playing a central role in sort of connecting everyone in the community," she said.

With the start of the new fiscal year less than three weeks away, Congress and the Bush Administration have not settled on a strategy to fund R&D programs in the coming year. While the new chairmen of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees have expressed a desire for "regular order" by passing each of the appropriations bills separately, time is running out. One alternative calls for program funding to be continued at current levels, and in some instances, cut.

The high gradient superconducting cavity is one of the most vital components for the ILC. There were heated discussions at the Snowmass 2005 workshop as to which cavity shape should be adopted for the ILC baseline and how to attain high-gradients in a reproducible way. While the TESLA type cavity has a proven maximum gradient up to 40-41MV/m, new contender schemes have been also vigorously pursued because they are likely to allow the physicists to push toward a higher gradient.
A popular conjecture among the experts is that a maximum of approximately 51MV/m should be attainable with a suitably shaped cavity, as limited by the maximum surface current that the niobium material can sustain in its superconducting state. In so doing, the use of the electro-polishing technique, pioneered by the superconducting cavity group at KEK, is considered to be a critical surface treatment process to apply in cavity preparation.

Saturday, September 17: "Blow the Whistle on Asthma" The American Lung Association of Illinois and Iowa is holding a series of Asthma Walks in the area on Saturday, in its "Blow the Whistle on Asthma" fund-raising campaign. The walk in Batavia will begin at 10 a.m. at the Park District's Peg Bond Center, next to the Batavia Police Department. Walks will also be held in Oak Brook and Vernon Hills.
