| Koolbeck Receives DC Educator Fellowship | ||

Particle Physics Division Guest Scientist Deborah Koolbeck has been chosen by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Triangle Coalition as one of four Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellows to serve on Capitol Hill. Koolbeck will spend the next ten months working in New Jersey Congressman Rush Holt's office in Washington, D.C.
"I want to change the world," Koolbeck said with a grin. "I know that realistically I can't do it in ten months, but I'm going to try." In Holt's office, Koolbeck will provide practical insights and "real world" perspectives to policy makers. Among other responsibilities, she will help run the R&D and Biomedical Caucuses; write speeches for Congressman Holt; work on math and science education legislation including the No Child Left Behind Act; and examine the effectiveness and content of upcoming standardized testing in science. Koolbeck has conducted technical R&D and simulations for various incarnations of NOvA for the past three summers. During the school year, Koolbeck teaches physics, astronomy and chemistry at the Chicago Academy for the Arts and is an educator at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.
"During my time at Fermilab, I have gained a deeper understanding of the scientific process, which is so much more than just the physics itself," she said. "The politics of justifying what you hope to achieve to those with funding, taking into account their goals and motivations, is undeniably important."

| From Science and Technology News, August 19, 2005 'The Infinite Book' and beyond ... By John D. Barrow Infinity has haunted human minds for thousands of years. It challenges theologians and scientists alike to understand it, cut it down to size, find out if it comes in different shapes or sizes, and decide whether we want to outlaw it or welcome it with open arms into our human descriptions of the universe. It is also a live issue. Physicists' quests for a theory of everything has been primarily guided by an attitude toward infinities. When asking a question of particle physics, for example, the appearance of an infinite answer was always taken as a warning that you had made a wrong turn in your search for a theory of everything. So, for decades, the inevitable appearance of infinity was managed by a strange subtraction procedure that removed the infinite part from the calculation, only to leave a finite residue to compare with the actual observation.

After a week of the Snowmass workshop, progress towards a common design is palpable.
Identifying all the decisions to be made and the factors that come into play for each of them is already a formidable task. The decisions are not independent, since any one decision has the potential to affect others. At the end of the first week at Snowmass many decisions have ben made but many others remain. A spreadsheet with more than 40 key decisions is circulating among the participants. As many decisions as can be made will be made. For the others, the work necessary to reach those decisions will be outlined. By the end of the year, the baseline configuration document will have been established that will guide the R&D in future years. Some Snowmass participants will see their favorite recommendations on how to build the ILC left on the cutting room floor. The value of the Snowmass workshop where all the choices are discussed in full with all participants is that it will make it easier for everyone to understand and line up behind a common international design.
