SIST Students Complete Rewarding Summer at Lab
Undergraduate interns in the SIST program
Undergraduate interns in the SIST program spent their summer making important contributions to the laboratory. This year's SIST students are (left to right): Ayomide Odunsi, Ayodele Onebokun, Linda M'mayi, McDavis Fasugba, Trivia Frazier, Marla Singleton, Judith Odili, Dennis Lamenti, Eleonora Figueroa, Sirius Ben-Judah, Gabriel Vega, Michael Carter, Duane Doles, Michelle Alvarado, and Donovan Tooke. The 15 students in Fermilab's Summer Internships in Science and Technology (SIST) program concluded their work at the lab with presentations of their projects on Tuesday, August 9. The SIST students, who are all undergraduates majoring in physics, electrical-mechanical engineering or computer science, spent the summer making important contributions to the lab in fields ranging from beam line dynamics to wireless networking.

SIST aims to provide research opportunities to students belonging to minority groups that have been historically underrepresented in the scientific community. "We look for well-rounded students with strong academic credentials and a strong interest in what we're doing at the lab," said Dianne Engram, manager of Fermilab's Equal Opportunity Office.

Founded in 1970, SIST is Fermilab's oldest educational program, and "one of the oldest programs of its kind in the DOE system," Engram explained. Although students must have an interest in science before applying to SIST, the internships often reinforce their desire to continue working in the field. "I knew I was interested in physics, and I really like what I'm doing here," said Donovan Tooke, who is entering his third year as a physics and engineering major at Dillard University. "I'm hoping to work at Fermilab as a career."

The internships also show students sides of sciences they were unfamiliar with before coming to the lab. "Coming to Fermilab was really an experience for me," said Trivia Frazier, a physics and biomedical engineering major who is also entering her third year at Dillard University. "I didn't know there was so much work that goes on behind-the-scenes."

"I hear about Fermi and the main experiments here all the time," said Ayodele Onibokun, a recent graduate of Bethune-Cookman College with a degree in computer science. "It's really my pleasure to be here. It's the best internship I've ever had."

Federal Agency to Donate $150M To Grid Project
By Quentin Hardy

The National Science Foundation (NSF), a federally-funded agency promoting basic scientific research, is giving TeraGrid, a massive grid-computer project, an additional $150 million for expansion and development.

Expansion of the grid, which is made up of eight fiber-linked data centers at universities and research institutions around the country, will not only make the grid mind-bogglingly fast and powerful but will also enable many more outsiders to connect to it and take advantage of its resources.

"We are going to extend the grid, bring in more computers," said Charles Catlett, a researcher at the University of Chicago's Computation Institute and the director of the TeraGrid project. "We'll make [the grid] accessible to an order-of-magnitude more people, make our existing tools a hundred times more powerful."

Safety Performance Goals
Performance Goals
Since goal-setting is not always easy, we offer some suggestions for your consideration.
It's that time of year when Fermilab employees are busy with performance reviews. According to the published schedule, we should all be well into the goal development stage for the next review period. When planning for the coming year, don't forget about ES&H. Here are some topics that may be amenable to inclusion.

Training—You should periodically check that required training is up to date via online training plans. Don't forget to verify that training needs have been properly identified using the Individual Training Needs Assessment (ITNA).

Inspections—Take a look at your work area(s) from an ES&H standpoint every so often. The scope of your inspection should match the scope of your authority.

Housekeeping—If your work areas tend to get messy, think about scheduling some clean up days.

Hazard assessmentsHazard assessments and safety procedures for routine operations should be reviewed on a periodic basis. Has a process changed? Are there new hazards? ...new personnel? ...better controls available?

Innovations—Consider whether there are processes that should be reviewed to see if they are amenable to improvement. (This is sometimes referred to as self-assessment.)

Vehicle accidents—Is your organization banging vehicles into things or having a lot of near-miss collisions? Consider whether there practices or conditions that should be modified to reduce these occurrences.

Follow up—Are there any other ES&H issues that need to be followed up at some time in the future?

Power Outage
The power will be cut to EAD Operations Center (although there should be a generator there to keep power up) on Saturday, August 27, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Life Insurance Plan Open Enrollment
The open enrollment period starts August 22, 2005 and ends on September 12, 2005. The plan representative from Life Insurance Company of North America will be in Wilson Hall at the One West conference room to give two presentations, the first at 10:00 a.m. and the second at noon. More information

PC Manager Meeting
The August PC Manager meeting will be held Wednesday, August 24th, from
9:00 - 10:00 a.m. in WH8X. There will be updates on software licenses, and security. There will be an open discussion regarding recent security vulnerabilities and rethinking the way the lab handles machine management.

Pool Hours Change
Due to a reduction in staff, the Village pool hours have changed for August and September. New schedule

Scottish Country Dancing
Scottish Country Dancing will meet Tuesday, Aug. 23, in Ramsey Auditorium in Wilson Hall. Instruction begins at 7:30 p.m. and newcomers are always welcome.
