| Annual GSA Triathlon Set For This Saturday |

Any and all interested Fermilab Users, employees, graduate students, family and friends are invited to take part in this summer's annual GSA Triathlon. The race will consist of an 800 yard swim followed by a 20 kilometer bike ride around the Fermilab site and a five kilometer run, and begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 20 at the village pool.
"For a triathlon, this one is very easy going," said GSA officer Jen Pursley. "It's meant for everyone to participate in at their own levels." Registration for the triathlon is free. While the GSA officers encourage participants to register before August 20, anyone ready to race at 8 a.m. on Saturday is welcome. Racers can compete individually or as a member of a two to three person team, and the top male and female finishers will receive a prize.
"I hope the participants enjoy the race," said Pursley. "This is a chance to have a good time and to meet other people who share your same interests. Who knows, you could find a new running buddy at the triathlon."

| New Life Insurance Plan Offered to Employees |

The Fermilab Benefits Office has selected an enhanced life insurance plan for all eligible employees with Life Insurance Company of North America, CIGNA. Employees may apply for life insurance coverage for themselves and their dependent(s) during the open enrollment period that starts on August 22 at 8:00 a.m. and ends on September 12 at 5:00 p.m. The guaranteed portion of this coverage will be effective on November 1, 2005.
A representative from the insurance carrier will give several presentations to explain the plan in detail and answer questions. These presentations will occur in Wilson Hall, 1 West, on If employees do not wish to make any changes to their life coverage, they do not need to complete any forms. For those employees wishing to increase their level of coverage, open enrollment forms and insurance applications are available at the Benefits Office.
"It's important for employees to plan what will happen to their families in the event of their death," said Wilma Cardona from the Benefits Office. "I recommend that employees review the brochure they received in the mail and work through the calculation worksheet to ensure that they have adequate amounts of life insurance."

From Physics Web, August 16, 2005 Number Theory By Belle Dumé A physicist in the US has proposed a new way of quantifying the scientific output of individual scientists. Jorge Hirsch of the University of California at San Diego says that the "h-index"—which is derived from the number of times that papers by the scientist are cited—gives an estimate of the "importance, significance and broad impact of a scientist's cumulative contributions." According to Hirsch the h-index "should provide a useful yardstick to compare different individuals" when recruiting new staff, deciding promotions and awarding grants. Read More

| ILC NewsLine Feature: And Yet They Will Collide |

The following appears in the inaugural edition of ILC NewsLine, the weekly e-mail newsletter of the International Linear Collider Global Design Effort.
Despite the nanometer size of the bunches of electrons and positrons produced at the future International Linear Collider, they will collide! The ILC will produce the tiniest particle beams ever created, some 10 billion electrons and positrons packed into five-nanometer beams. Controlling the alignment of the beam will be crucial. Further, after interaction, the 10 Megawatt beam must be extracted safely, to protect both the detector and the accelerator. "The great challenge is to make the beams as small as possible at the interaction point," said physicist Phil Burrows, of Queen Mary, University or London, "keeping in mind that we have to make these tiny spots collide."
The scientists of Snowmass Working Group 4, "Beam Delivery," are studying this problem, looking at everything that happens after the Main Linac, including Beam Delivery, interaction point, crossing angles and feedback system. Will there be two interaction points? What will be the collision angle? There are myriad questions to address.
