Fermilab Director Pier Oddone will be one of the guest scientists at this month's Ask-a-Scientist program on Sunday, August 7, at 1 p.m. Now in its third year, the monthly program gives lab visitors the chance to meet scientists and to ask them questions ranging from "Who was Fermi?" to "What is antimatter?"

The two-hour program takes place in Fermilab's Wilson Hall. In addition to a talk by Oddone, participants will have a chance to tour the Fermilab accelerator complex and to visit the popular 15th-floor viewing area.

The program is free of charge. Registration is required by: please contact Nancy Lanning by Friday,
August 5.

Puzzled over Village Dig? FESS Shares Some Answers
Village Dig
The village area is the site for the south alignment of the Domestic Water Systems Water Main Upgrade Project, which will improve and update the lab's water supply. (Click on image for larger version.)
Ground work in the village area over the last month has caught the attention of many Fermilab users. The digging is part of the Domestic Water Systems Water Main Upgrade Project, undertaken to improve the Lab's supply of potable water. Head of FESS Construction Safety Tom Prosapio says that engineers will join the main campus and village water systems in two connecting pipe alignments that will continue to deliver water to the Fermilab village area and now also deliver water supply from the city of Warrenville to the main campus. The two on site water wells that currently supply the main campus system will be taken off line.

"An on site well system," says Deputy Head of FESS Randy Ortgiesen, "has historically supplied domestic water for the Fermilab main campus." After 30 years of production, the wells are "reaching the end of their useful life. A decision needed to be made to either retrofit the existing wells, drill new wells, or purchase water from a neighboring city." A water options study completed in 2004 showed that increasing the Warrenville water supply to Fermilab's main site would best fulfill existing and future water requirements. "The DOE Fermi Site Office," added Ortgiesen, "has been working with Warrenville on a new water contract that is expected to be signed this week."

"The south alignment of piping," said Prosapio, "runs from Batavia Road and Sauk Blvd to the DZero Utility Corridor at CZero, and the north alignment which extends from 26 Sauk Blvd to a water valve in the fixed target area at Tagged Photon Lab will provide supply to the main campus in the very near future."

Scientists from UH pursue key particles
By Jan TenBruggencate
Physicists hope within a few years to sink a 60-foot sphere filled with mineral oil into the deep ocean off the Hawaiian Islands to serve as a detector of some of science's most enigmatic particles: neutrinos and anti-neutrinos.

The study of neutrino physics is in its infancy. University of Hawai'i scientists are part of a team that announced in the journal Nature the first positive identification of anti-neutrinos from the decay of radioactive matter in the Earth.

Director's Corner
One month later...
Oddone
Pier Oddone drives past CDF on his way to work. (Click on image for larger version.)
It's been a month since the start of my job at Fermilab, and I am having the most stimulating time of my life! Until Site 29 is ready for Barbara and me to move in, I live in the Village in one half of an 1860s farmhouse, the Berkey Farm, dragged from Wilson Street to the Village more than three decades ago. From there my great commute is all of three minutes, a short drive to the High Rise but a reminder every day of what a spectacular place this is.

Wilson's spirit permeates the place. I check the buffalo herd and the growing calves, the state of the trees suffering from the drought, the prairie plants that I am starting to recognize, the elegant high tension poles that are more than ready to be replaced, all with an increasingly possessive eye. Going by the red/orange CDF building is like a triple shot of espresso—it revs me up.

Now it is a beehive of activity at all hours, but in my mind's eye I cannot avoid seeing it empty at the end of the decade when we are all done with the Tevatron. Across the ring, I picture the same thing for DZero. By the time I get to the High Rise the sense of urgency is enormous. Not only do we have to exploit the great opportunities we have now, but we have to construct a future in a very short time. Doing both is a great challenge and a fantastic opportunity. It is also like rebuilding an airplane in mid-flight, difficult, almost impossible. But doing the impossible is what we are good at.

Accelerator Update
July 30 - August 1
- During this 48 hour period operations established two stores that combined with an existing store that provided approximately 58 hours and 20 minutes of luminosity to the experiments
- Booster kicker keeps beam off

Announcements
SEWS Test on Tuesday
The Sitewide Emergency Warning System (SEWS) is scheduled for testing on August 2, 2005 at 10:00a.m. All components including the Emergency Alert Receivers (EARs) and voice interfaces for CDF, D-Zero, FCC and Wilson Hall will be tested. The test will begin and end with the announcement "THIS IS A TEST OF THE SITEWIDE EMERGENCY WARNING SYSTEM." Safety Alert Monitors and Emergency Alert Receivers will need to be reset after the test.

Users' Executive Committee Elections
The election to replace half of the members of the Users' Executive Committee is well underway. Thanks to those of you have already voted. If you have still not voted, please cast your ballot. Voting will close at midnight on Thursday, August 4th, and the results will be posted early next week.

Air Pollution Action Day
Today's conditions are favorable for unhealthy ozone and particulate matter levels. Residents of the Chicago metropolitan area are asked to curb vehicle use, postpone activities that use gasoline powered equipment, conserve energy, and avoid burning wood or yard waste.

Pool Schedule Changes
Due to a reduction of staff the later part of August, the Fermilab Pool schedule has changed for August and September. You may check the Recreation Office Home Page to view these changes. The schedule will also be posted at the pool. If you should have any questions, contact Jean Guyer (x2548).

Bowling League
Fermilab Wednesday night bowling league is currently looking for a few bowlers to fill some empty teams. We are looking for individuals or complete teams. Bowling starts Sept. 7 at 5:30 at Bowling Green Sports center on Rt38 in West Chicago. This is a 30 week league. The cost is $14.00/wk. Interested parties should contact Robert Hively (x4467) or Al Legan (x4074). More Information
