Sissakian Will Lead JINR
With Collaborative Vision
In January, 2006, Alexei Sissakian will assume his new position as the
fifth director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR),
an International Intergovernmental Organization located in Russia.
|
Alexei Sissakian |
He will be replacing current director Vladimir Kadyshevski.
Sissakian arrived at JINR in 1968 and has since served as the director of
the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics (BLTP) and JINR vice director.
He is also a prolific writer and has published five collections of poetry.
"The last 15 years were really hard times for the Institute," Sissakian said;
however, he is confident that JINR "can develop dynamically" in the upcoming
years. Education is particularly important to Sissakian. "JINR is trying
to develop education outreach programs and have many students from the
surrounding area and Eastern Europe [study at the lab]," explained Dmitri
Denisov, Fermilab scientist and long term colleague of Sissakian. "They
are using the brainpower that exists in order to educate the younger generation."
Located in Dubna, a town north of Moscow, JINR has been an important collaborator
on several Fermilab experiments. "Fermilab's history with JINR is longer than with any other non-U.S. lab,"
said Fermilab Assistant Director Roy Rubinstein. JINR collaborated on the first experiments to run at Fermilab in
1972, and has continued to make important contributions to experiments since
then. "The JINR-FNAL cooperation today is as fruitful as it has ever been,"
Sissakian said. Most recently, "our institute has made very significant
contributions to the upgrades of [CDF and DZero] for efficient Run-II
data taking."
"I've known Alexei Sissakian for many years, and he is very much in favor
of continuing and strengthening the collaboration between our labs during
his directorship. We're delighted that he is going to be the director of
JINR," said Rubinstein.

Between Series, an Actress Became a Superstar (in Math)
by Kenneth Chang
On her Web site, Danica McKellar, the actress best known as Winnie Cooper on the television series "The Wonder Years," takes on questions that require more than a moment's thought to answer.
"If it takes Sam six minutes to wash a car by himself," one fan asked recently, "and it takes Brian eight minutes to wash a car by himself, how long will it take them to wash a car together?"

Donors Needed for Fermilab
Blood Drive on August 1, 2
Fermilab will hold a blood drive on August 1 and 2 to benefit the Heartland
Blood Centers. The donation center will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
in the NE training room on the ground floor of Wilson Hall. Appointments
can be made online
or by calling Lori Limberg of ES&H at x.6615. Each donation should take about
30 minutes.
Limberg organizes approximately three blood drives per year at Fermilab on behalf
of the ES&H Administrative Team, and was quick to offer advice to prospective
donors. Unlike before a medical blood test, "you don't have to fast before
the donation," she explained. "It's better to eat a healthy breakfast and

drink lots of fluids, because it helps hydrate your veins and makes the
process faster."
Limberg also recommends considering the new red cell donation option, which
separates red cells and plasma during the procedure and returns the plasma
to the donor. "Because you get plasma back, you feel better afterwards,"
Limberg said. Although red cell donations may take 15-20 minutes longer
than a regular donation, a smaller needle is used and the process should be
more comfortable.
All donors will receive a $25 gift certificate to
DiningDough.com and be entered in a prize drawing, a Fermilab blood
drive tradition. Donors must weigh 110 pounds or more and be at least
17 years of age. Potential donors should review the
Donor Qualification
Guide before making
an appointment, especially if one has lived or traveled extensively outside
the United States or Canada. Contact Limberg at llimberg@fnal.gov
