Lab Holds Sweet Sendoff For Witherell and Family | ||

The sorrow of parting had a sweet beginning with cake and ice cream on Thursday, July 14 as Fermilab bid farewell to Director Michael Witherell after six years. The afternoon symposium, "Fermilab Science: The Witherell Years," guided Ramsey Auditorium attendees through the key times and significant advances of Witherell's term as Director, from July 1999 to June 2005, from breaking ground for the MINOS experiment to establishing the lab as the favored US site for the proposed International Linear Collider.
A labwide reception in the Atrium followed, and dinner at Chez Léon completed the day as Mike, Beth and Lily Witherell prepared to leave for California, where Mike Witherell will be Vice-Chancellor for Research at the University of California-Santa Barbara. "This has been a great day-and I didn't have to prepare a talk for today," Witherell said. "It's been a privilege to work at this lab, and it's been a privilege to work with such talented people. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of working here these six years."
New director Pier Oddone concluded the day's presentations with a salute to what he called a bright future with exciting science for the lab. "Our success will be in large measure because of the foundation that Mike established-a very strong foundation across the spectrum of the lab," Oddone said.

In an effort to provide Fermilab employees with the most up to date policies
and to save trees, the Personnel Policies have switched to an entirely
electronic format. If you have looked for a policy recently, you probably
discovered our new
Working at Fermilab
website. The website provides a guide to the Laboratory's
policies and procedures. You will find a link to Personnel, Director's,
ES&H and Scientific Policies. The website also includes all of the
SPDs (Summary Plan Descriptions) for benefits. You can find a link to the website
on the Lab
Services home page and click on Policies and Guidelines. If you
don't have access to a computer, remember that there are computers
available in the library for your use.
Watch for new additions to the website. The next feature will be a glossary of terms used in the personnel policies and procedures.
Please throw away your blue Personnel Policy Guide and your Fermilab Employee
Handbook! They are obsolete and will not be updated.

From Nature Magazine, July 14, 2005 First 'data' from LHC Alison Wright Components installed for the ATLAS detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider report their first signals — not yet the Higgs boson, but the tell-tale tracks of cosmic muons. At last week's Lepton-Photon Symposium, held at Uppsala University, Sweden, the ATLAS collaboration proudly reported the first 'data' taken at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Any sign of the long-sought Higgs boson will not appear before the proton collider springs to life in mid 2007. But as the monster detectors are assembled — ATLAS will stand five storeys high — signals generated by cosmic-ray particles are the first sign that all is working as it should. |

Work Planning | ||

A common theme of this column has been that ES&H depends on effective work
planning. This principle is reflected in the recent revision to
chapter 2060
of Fermilab's ES&H Manual, Work Planning and Hazard Analysis. The previous
version of this document focused on hazard analysis, while the revised version
has a broader scope. A pre-job inspection (job site walk down), pre-job briefing
and post-job critique are now required.
An inspection of the job site is conducted prior to developing a hazard analysis. This will help assure that associated hazards and work control issues are addressed. The supervisor is also expected to go over the work plan with employees to make everyone aware of how the job is supposed to proceed. This review includes a summary of the critical steps, anticipating what can go wrong and reviewing the controls needed to control hazards. After the work is complete, participants are expected to analyze whether changes should be implemented the next time the task is performed. In addition to these changes, the layout of the form used to document hazard analyses now includes a section for checking off the personal protective equipment required for the job. As before, the level of formality is tied to task complexity and the extent of the hazard. The table of guidelines to determine when a written analysis is needed has been expanded and clarified. Recall also that a hazard analysis is unnecessary if an appropriate standard operating procedure already exists.
