Fermilab Will Celebrate the Witherell Years Tomorrow
All Fermilab employees, users, and contractors are invited to enjoy cake and ice cream with Mike Witherell tomorrow between 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the Wilson Hall Atrium. Come thank Mike for his years of service to the Laboratory and wish him the best in the future. Witherell Symposium A public science symposium to honor Mike Witherell is also planned. It is called "Fermilab Science: The Witherell Years," and will be held in Ramsey Auditorium at 1:00 p.m. This symposium will celebrate Mike Witherell's contributions to Fermilab and the science advancements that have taken place here over the past six years. A reception in the Atrium will follow the symposium from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. more information |

Mendez Rises to Challenge of 100 Mile Bike Ride | ||

On June 19, 2005, Mari Mendez went from casual bike rider to accomplished athlete by completing
the 100-mile Swedish Days Ride, sponsored by the Fox Valley Bicycle and Ski Club. Mendez, an
Administrative Support Assistant in Fermilab's Business Services Section, trained and rode with
a group of other riders from her local Fox Valley YMCA in Plano.
"I saw the poster at the 'Y' advertising the Century Challenge," the 100-mile option for the Swedish Days Ride, Mendez explained. "I'd done a 26-mile ride before and it almost killed me, so I thought 100 miles would really be a challenge." Learning from her difficult experience with the 26-mile ride, Mendez devoted herself to training for the Century Challenge. The YMCA group trained 6 days per week for 13 weeks before the ride. "I had done casual biking here and there, usually 6 or 7 miles at most," Mendez said. "Our first training ride was 16 miles, and afterwards I thought, 'There's no way I can do 100 miles.'" But by riding regularly and steadily increasing her mileage, Mendez fully prepared herself for the challenge of 100 miles, which she completed in 6 hours and 25 minutes. The training itself also brought Mendez non-athletic benefits. "We did all of our outdoor training on country roads west of here, so I got to enjoy beautiful scenery. I also met a lot of wonderful people and made some great friendships," she explained.
Although finding time to ride almost every day was one of the biggest challenges for Mendez, who
is the mother of two children, she is now "hooked" on biking. "The best part about the ride was
the awesome feeling of accomplishment," she said.

Barbara Brooks on the Job As New Deputy Head of LSS
Brooks began her work at Fermilab with similar, although not as far-ranging, responsibilities: "I was brought in to shape the training and development program," she says, "which was very new at the time." Now her area of influence is much larger, extending to the Education Office, Information Resources and Visual Media Services. LSS Section Head Kay VanVreede says that Brooks "has the right set of skills that Lab Services is going to have to provide in the next several years. She has really been successful and I look forward to her work on programs and initiatives for the whole department."
Losing one major colleague to voluntary retirement and another to continuing education, Brooks'
immediate job was to re-staff the department for the work ahead. What she most looks forward to,
however, is "the opportunity to reach every employee in some way. I look forward to meeting each
and every one and asking how we can assist them in their work. 'How can we help you?' is the
question I'd most like to ask."

Recreation Office Sales Suspended Due to a reduction in staff, the Recreation Office will temporarily suspend the sale of tickets, T-shirts and canoe rentals as of Friday, July 15 at Noon. The suspended tickets are AMC Movie Tickets, Great America Tickets, and Renaissance Faire Tickets. All other programs will stay the same. The Recreation Office will be closed Friday, July 15 at Noon for training. If you have any questions you may contact the Recreation Office, x 2548.
