ES&H Installs New Signs to
Ensure Safe Cycling Summer Fermilab users are accustomed to dealing safely with work-related hazards, but ES&H head Bill Griffing says that one of the biggest hazards on site is cyclist/motorist traffic, something that has drawn more attention as the bike-riding season arrives. Motorist complaints and past accidents prompted ES&H to request adding safety reminders to the Illinois Rules of the Road signs at lab entrances. "We are trying to raise awareness that we enforce these rules
Griffing added that bike clubs are the biggest problem for motorists. Unable to ride in groups on the smaller bike paths, clubs enjoy the Fermilab grounds by taking to the roads. "This is a facility with actual roadways that can have heavy traffic at times," Griffing said. "We want to encourage recreational use of the facility, but we need to caution motorists as well as cyclists to respect each other's use of the roads."
The new signs remind bikers and motorists to obey the Illinois Rules of the
Road enforced on all public roadways. This includes simply stopping at stop
signs and keeping bikes in single-file when approached from behind by motorists.
"It is important to let the public into our facility," said Griffing,
"but cyclists have been seriously hurt in collisions with cars in the past."
Griffing hopes the signs will ensure safer and more cooperative traffic on the
Fermilab roadways.

Bicyclists Chase the Moon

In the early hours of Sunday, July 24, hundreds of bike riders will
don helmets and headlights for a midnight ride across Fermilab. The
second annual Chase the Moon Bike Ride will begin at the nearby Marmion
Academy at 12:01 a.m. and will continue across almost 25 miles of Fermilab roads.
Festivities are from 9-11:59 p.m. on Saturday, July 23 at Marmion Academy.
While many of Fermilab's roads are always open to the public, the Chase the Moon ride gives the community a chance to see the prairie under the stars and ride through outdoor areas of the lab that are usually restricted. "There are a number of rides in the Fox Valley area, but Fermilab is a perfect place to ride at night," said Pam Bellm, the ride's founder. "I lived in St. Louis and rode in a late-night bike ride there, and thought it was awesome," she explained. "There is also a night bike ride in Chicago, but I thought there were enough bike riders in the Fox Valley Area to be able to organize a great event right here." According the Bill Flaherty of ES&H's Security Division, last year's event presented no problems to the lab. "We don't want any event that is going to be dangerous or interfere with the operations of the lab, and as far as we know, Chase the Moon is not a problem," he said.
Registration for this year's Chase the Moon Bike Ride is available online.
The ride will be limited to 500 riders, and each
participant will receive a T-shirt, a goodie bag, and a healthy breakfast
at the end of the ride. The 25-mile route can be shortened for recreational
riders and all funds raised will be donated to the Three Fires Council,
Boy Scouts of America.

Air Pollution Action Day: Wednesday, June 29 Today, Wednesday, June 29, the air quality is forecasted to reach unhealthy levels Residents of the Metropolitan Chicago area are asked to take actions to reduce ozone and particle pollution. Suggested actions include: 1. Limit driving. Rideshare, carpool, walk or bike. 2. Take public transportation. 3. If you must drive, avoid excessive idling, abrupt starts and use I-PASS. 4. Refuel your vehicle after 7 P.M., when sunlight is not as strong. 5. Do not use gasoline powered recreational vehicles on Action Days. 6. Postpone lawn mowing and gardening chores that use gasoline-powered equipment on Action Days. 7. Use a charcoal chimney or electric starter instead of lighter fluid when starting a barbeque grill. 8. Limit use of household and personal products that cause fumes. 9. Conserve energy at home to reduce energy needs from power plants. 10. Do not burn leaves or other yard waste. 11. Postpone burning wood in fireplaces on Action Days.
