Fermilab Celebrates
One Inverse Femtobarn

Champagne

Today, from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m., the lab will celebrate the beginning of the "femtobarn era" at Fermilab, with a champagne toast in the Wilson Hall atrium. The latest Tevatron store pushed the total integrated luminosity of Run II beyond 1,000 inverse picobarns (pb-1), also referred to as one inverse femtobarn (fb-1). All employees and users are invited to join the lab directorate for a short ceremony and a glass of the "bubbly." (Note: The usual director's coffee break for the afternoon has been canceled.)

Run II began in March 2001, with luminosity still counted in units of nanobarns. Since then the laboratory has consistently increased the number of collisions delivered to the experiments. In July 2003, the Tevatron first achieved a weekly integrated luminosity of 10 pb-1. Today, the record for integrated luminosity in a single week exceeds 20 pb-1.

The timing of the femtobarn record couldn't have been better. Today is the first day of the Tevatron Connection workshop, with scientists discussing the latest results from the CDF and DZero collider experiments.

New Fellows Arriving for GEM Summer Internships
GEM Students
Fermilab's GEM summer interns are (left to right) Gustavo Alverio, Hector Leon, Cheryl Upshaw, and Ryan Rivera (Click on image for larger version.)
Each summer, Fermilab sponsors summer internships for GEM fellows in engineering and the sciences. Fermilab's 2005 GEM fellows are Hector Leon of Texas A&M, Cheryl Upshaw of IIT (Chicago campus), Ryan Rivera of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Gustavo Alverio of University of Central Florida. Leon, Upshaw, and Alverio are pursuing MS degrees in Electrical Engineering, while Rivera is seeking an MS in Computer Engineering.

"Fermilab has been a very strong supporter of GEM," Fermilab Equal Opportunity Manager Dianne Engram said. The Lab joined the consortium in 1979, and received GEM's 2004 Employer Member of the Year Award for its efforts to increase the number of fellows invited to the Lab for internships and for its sponsorship of other GEM initiatives. Engram also works to pair current interns with GEM alumni who now work at Fermilab full-time. Some of Fermilab's four GEM alumni have served as internship mentors and were featured in the consortium's 2003 Annual Report.

"Through GEM, Fermilab directly supports underrepresented minority students with the masters' degree, which is the entrée to later employment in industry," Engram said. "We are continuing to invite fellows to do real work at the lab and get the skills necessary for full time employment."

In its 29-year history, GEM has supported over 2400 minority students seeking masters' or doctoral degrees in engineering and the sciences. Fellows receive financial assistance, internships, mentoring, and professional development training.

Kids Explore Science and Parents' Jobs at DASTOW
DASTOW '05
Fermilab's first summertime DASTOW attracted about 300 participants, lined up here for the annual group portrait on the front steps of Wilson Hall. (Click on image for larger version.)
Whether meeting new friends, spending time with their parents, or doing cartwheels around the Wilson Hall atrium, the children who participated in Fermilab's annual Daughters and Sons to Work Day (DASTOW) had a memorable experience. Held yesterday, June 23, DASTOW '05 invited children of Fermilab employees to learn about their parents' jobs and the lab itself.

After the annual group photo was taken outside of Wilson Hall at 8:30 a.m., children and their parents moved to Ramsey Auditorium for Jerry Zimmerman's always-impressive Cryo Show. Families could also take morning trips to the Fermilab Fire Department, the Buffalo Pasture, and to the Lederman Science Center for Prairie Tours. The afternoon was left open for parents to show their children their specific jobs at the lab.

DASTOW has been traditionally held in the spring, but Fermilab changed it to a summer date this year in order to minimize school conflicts. An educational and science oriented program geared toward children in middle school and high school was also added, including talks about forces, physics careers, and the physics of sports.

While enjoying a hot dog lunch in the Wilson Hall cafeteria, Sarah Ganster, age 10, said that her favorite part of the day was "probably the science show." Arrione Meeks, age nine, agreed, but also said, "I liked the Fire Department because we got to put out a fire." Kayla and Kyle Anderson, ages five and three, have been DASTOW regulars for three years and were happy that the buffalo came closer to the fence this year. But according to Kayla, one part of the day never gets old - "Coloring on my dad's [dry erase] board!"

Debbie Harris
Debbie Harris of the MINOS experiment discussed "Physics in the Real World," one of the activities in the new parallel track for middle-schoolers. Don Lincoln of DZero demonstrated "Forces and Motion," and TD's Dave Harding and AD's Linda Valerio explained "The Physics of Sports." (Click on image for larger version.)
