Where the Buffalo Roam

|
John Plese of Roads and Grounds was recently named Fermilab's new buffalo
herdsman, replacing longtime herdsman Don Hanson, who retired April 22.
Plese worked with Hanson for several years, gaining the knowledge and
experience to keep Fermilab's resident bovines happy and healthy.
Plese loves animals and is looking forward to the new responsibility, but
will still work on many other projects such as road work and fence construction.
"I love working outdoors and running heavy machinery," Plese said.
While most of the buffalo routines will stay the same, Plese will try a
slightly different feeding system that modifies hay and grain consumption.
"If you feed them too much, they get fat, and then you get health problems,"
Plese said. "It's better to give them too little than too much."
Plese's supervisor Mike Becker has confidence in Plese's abilities.
"He is very talented, detailed, and is always able to complete things,"
Becker said. "He is a versatile person, and will continue to help in many
areas of ground maintenance."

CDF Unveils New Website
|
|
The CDF collaboration unveiled its new website on April 21. A web team,
including CDF's Tony Liss and Xeno Media's Kevin Munday, transformed the
site into a communications channel for both the public and the physics
community, with easier navigation and a general facelift.
The original website had been developed at the dawn of the internet era, and
the collaboration wanted the new look to reflect the state of particle physics
research at the detector. CDF Co-Spokesperson Young-Kee Kim is happy with the
result. "The web design team did an excellent job," Kim said. "We like it very
much." But Kim cautions work still needs to be done. "We now have a nice front
door, but the interior still needs a bit of work."

Biggest ever cosmos simulation
Astronomers have used supercomputers to re-create how the Universe evolved into the shape it is today.
The simulation by an international team is the biggest ever attempted and shows how structures in the Universe changed and grew over billions of years.
The Millennium Run, as it is dubbed, could help explain observations made by astronomers and shed more light on the Universe's elusive dark energy field.
