A new session of the Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel, P-5,
will soon convene, with new membership and a new charter. Robin Staffin,
Associate Director for High Energy Physics in DOE's Office of Science
invites the Fermilab scientific staff and users to a discussion of P-5's
charge today from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in One West.
The discussion will be
streamed live online.

Dr. Robert Kaufmann Explores "Oil and the American Way of Life" on
Wednesday, June 1 in Fermilab Colloquium Series on Energy Issues In the continuing Fermilab Colloquium series on world energy issues, Dr. Robert Kaufmann of the Center for Energy & Environmental Studies at Boston University will confront some disturbing answers to questions about oil consumption that American consumers would probably rather not ask. Dr. Kaufmann will present "Oil and the American Way of Life: Don't Ask,
The talk, geared for general audiences, is free of charge and open to the
public. Dr. Kaufmann will focus on how oil tilted from increasing supplies
at low prices to decreasing supplies at higher prices, and how a dependence
on inexpensive energy can threaten the health of the U.S. economy.

From BBC News, May 23, 2005 Wormhole 'no use' for time travel By Paul Rincon For budding time travellers, the future (or should that be the past?) is starting to look bleak. Hypothetical tunnels called wormholes once looked like the best bet for constructing a real time machine. These cosmic shortcuts, which link one point in the Universe to another, are favoured by science fiction writers as a means both of explaining time travel and of circumventing the limitations imposed by the speed of light.
The concept of wormholes will be familiar to anyone who has watched the TV programmes Farscape, Stargate SG1 and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Lab Services Laughs All The Way to EHFD Trophy | ||

Last Wednesday, May 18, Fermilab's annual Employee Health and Fitness Day
drew 268 participants to demonstrate the day's theme, "Laughter Is The
Best Medicine." The total was up from 240 last year. The traveling
trophy went to Laboratory Services, which had the largest participation
percentage from a group or section. Business Services was a close second,
and nearly half of the DOE Office at Fermilab participated as well.
Jean Guyer, of Laboratory Services/Recreation Office and the event's organizer, said the cloudy day had a silver lining. "If the sun had come out, it might have been pretty humid," Guyer said. Employees walked, ran, or biked around the ring with friends and coworkers, stopping every mile or so to participate in three stations: "Fish for a Duck," where employees snared a rubber duckie to win a whoopee cushion or an exploding foam ice cream cone; "Hawaiian Hula Hoop," where participants hula hooped or did a quick hula dance to win a kazoo; and "Funky Feet Walk," where contestants raced around cones wearing oversized blue foam feet to win a yo-yo. There was a drawing after completion of all three stations for 150 prizes ranging from small personal fans to self-inflating beds.
The Recreation Office and Wellness Works offers special thanks to all of
the volunteers who helped make EHFD a success: Bernie Dugan, Mae
Strobel, Nancy Sells, Connie Kania, Ingrid Fang, Pam Noyes, Karen Karlix,
Lou Dal Monte, Bill Wickenberg, Rod Walton, Chuck Grimm, Angie Prosapio,
and Bob Andree. "We couldn't have done it without them," Guyer said.

Accelerated C++ Short Course On June 7, Fermilab will offer the first session of Accelerated C++: A Short Course in Practical Programming by Example. The Short Course is an extended professional development experience that emphasizes computer programming in modern standard C++. No tuition is charged; the only cost is for the required textbooks. Walter Brown, who participates on Fermilab's behalf in the international C++ standardization effort, is the course instructor. He is a member of the Computing Division's CEPA department.
