ILC Accelerator R&D Aims:
Cut Risk, Aid Bid to Host
This article is the second of a three-part series on the EPP 2010
meeting at Fermilab.
Thursday: Director-designate Pier Oddone's vision of the future of Fermilab.

Fermilab Associate Director for Accelerators Steve Holmes posed the big questions immediately about accelerator R&D for the proposed International Linear Collider. "Is this thing going to work?" Holmes said, introducing his talk on Monday to the EPP 2010 panel. "And what is it going to take to get us there?"
The R&D program includes significant US presence with all major subsystems of
the machine, Holmes said, which is needed to mount a credible bid to host the
ILC. The Fermilab ILC effort focuses on leadership in superconducting
radiofrequency (SC RF) technology, establishing lab-based facilities for
fabricating and testing as part of a US-based capability in high-gradient
technology. The Fermilab goal, Holmes said, "is to provide the US with the

best possible host site for the ILC."
Holmes told the panel that, driven by the physics goals, the luminosity
goals for the ILC are very aggressive and offer significant risk, but the goal of the accelerator R&D program is to reduce that risk. He added that the energy of the beam is not the greatest risk to ILC.
The difficulty, Holmes explained in tracing the path of the beam, is that while luminosity is directly proportional to beam power, it is inversely proportional to the vertical size of the beam. The beam densities produced at the injection system must be preserved in the Linac, then maintained in the collisions at the Interaction Region. Holmes described a "huge effort to get the vertical beam size down."

Fermilab Computing Division Combats Sober Virus
|
|
The large number of recent SPAM messages in German has been traced
to the Sober virus,
which uses an infected address book to send email of
a political nature. The Fermilab Email Administrators are working
on properly tagging these messages as SPAM.
Employees can always report a message as SPAM by using the new
Spam Reporting Tool.
The Fermilab CD/CSS/CSI Email Team recently made this new tool available to help
combat spam. It allows the Fermilab user community to report
mis-classified spam emails and uses that information to "train" the spam
filtering machines.
A form is now available for reporting spam email that was not tagged as
spam, as well as non-spam email that was erroneously tagged as spam. The
reported emails are fed back to the postmaster, who will then review
them and process them into the Bayesian Filtering module on the spam
tagging machines. Reporting a single email will not necessarily change the way the same
email may be tagged in the future, but should correct most mistakes that
affect a large number of users.
Since the activation of the Bayesian Filtering module, Fermilab's Computing
Division has seen an
almost 10% increase in the amount of spam being tagged.

Computers of the grid, unite!
by D. Murali
Grid computing promises to do the unimaginable. Hold your breath.
WRITING in Chicago Sun-Times (www.suntimes.com) on May 2, Science Reporter Jim Ritter declares that Fermilab, `the world's most powerful subatomic particle accelerator', has 250 trillion reasons to outsource data. To know `how', read on.

The Director's Corner is running on Wednesday this week because of
the EPP 2010 meeting, which took place on Monday and Tuesday.
Good Morning!
|
Mike Witherell |
This edition of Fermilab Today includes the second in a three-part article
on the meeting of the National Academy panel EPP2010: Elementary Particle
Physics in the 21st Century. I can't add much to the Mike Perricone's detailed
reports of that meeting, but I can share with you my personal perspective.
I thought that Monday was a very good day for Fermilab and for particle
physics in the U.S. The speakers, who were primarily from the Fermilab
staff and user community, did an outstanding job of articulating the
opportunities for discoveries in particle physics and of describing
the experiments and accelerators needed to realize those opportunities.
For those of you who were not there, I particularly recommend to you
Pier Oddone's talk, "A Vision for Fermilab." The transparencies will
be posted online.
In addition, the streaming video will be available at Visual Media
Service's archive.

Register Now for the 2005 Users' Meeting, June 8-9
|
|
If you want to learn about Fermilab's future, hear about recent developments
with the International Linear Collider, catch up on the latest news from
Washington and the EPP2010 panel, and enjoy a Festa Italiana all within the
span of 48-hours, register now
for the 2005 Users' Meeting.
This year's meeting will be on June 8 and 9 at Fermilab. Registration is
free, and all users and employees are invited to attend. Robin Staffin,
Barry Barish and Joe Dehmer will be just a few of this year's featured
speakers. The 2005 Tollestrup Prize and the 2005 URA Thesis Award will
also be presented.
Mike Witherell and Pier Oddone will both be featured speakers, giving
Fermilab's users a chance to bid farewell to one and welcome the other.
"This is an exciting transitional time for the lab as we are welcoming
the new director and planning our future," said Ken Bloom, who is organizing
this year's meeting. "The Users' Meeting is a great opportunity for our
user community to learn about and discuss both the present and future program."
A tentative agenda and other information about the 2005 Users' Meeting
is
available online.

Employee Health & Fitness Day Today
Employee Health & Fitness Day will be on
May 18 from 11:30-1:30 on Ring Road beginning at A1.
Walk, run, rollerblade, or bike your way around the ring.
This year's theme is "Laughter is the Best Medicine." A table
will be set up at A1 where participants may sign-in, pick up
their game ticket, and a bottle of water. Stations will be
set up around the ring where you will find games to play,
prizes to win and cheers of encouragement. At the end stop
off at the prize table and pick a ticket to see if you are a
winner. The rain date will be May 19.
