Illinois Lieutenant Governor's Office Visits Fermilab | ||

On Wednesday, April 27, members of Illinois Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn's
office spent the day at Fermilab. Senior Policy Advisors Ryan Mouw and Dan
Persky toured the lab, along with Mercedes Lyson, a fellow in the Lt. Governor's
office, and Nancy Pollard, a Horticulture Coordinator for a University of Illinois
Extension. The main purpose of the group's visit was to meet with Mike Becker, Bob
Lootens and Dave Shemanske of Roads & Grounds, in hopes of using Fermilab's prairie
seed for the Lt. Governor's Illinois Rain Garden Initiative.
An environmental program, the Illinois Rain Garden Initiative started last year to help prevent flooding and to improve storm water management. During the month of May, schools across Illinois will plant gardens consisting entirely of native plant species on school properties. Eventually, the rain gardens will develop into natural water quality systems that collect runoff and filter the groundwater. Fermilab's Roads & Grounds department has acted as a consultant since the initiative began last year, sharing their experience of growing and maintaining approximately 1200 acres of restored prairie.
After touring Fermilab's prairie, DZero's Amber Jenkins accompanied the group on
a tour of the 15th floor and the Linac. The final stop of the day was in the Main
Control Room, where AD's Duane Newhart gave the group a tour of the "Mission
Control" of Fermilab.

Wallace Kivisto Retiring
To Home and the Vikings Business Service's Wallace Kivisto retired last Friday, April 29, 2005 after nearly 16 years at Fermilab. Kivisto always felt like an individual
Kivisto has worked at Fermilab since May of 1989. He spent time in Technical
Support before switching to BS. "I will miss the people the most," said
Kivisto. "I've had so many good times and tried to make the most out
of everyday." During his retirement, Kivisto, a big Minnesota Vikings fan,
plans on slowing down, taking it easy, and caring for his wife Regina,
who is ill. He and Regina have five children, and he now has 11
grandchildren. "I think Fermilab is a great place to work, and
I enjoyed coming to work everyday," said Kivisto.

From The Hindu, May 2, 2005 India gets ready with ambitious science project Mumbai, May 2. (PTI):The two volume feasibility report on the India Based Neutrino Observatory (INO) was on Sunday formally presented to the Centre by the physicists from all over the country at a scientific meeting at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) here.
The report on the Rs 500 crore project of the country's hi-tech Neutrino Observatory was given to Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar by the Neutrino Collaboration Group (NCG) formed by 17 institutes and universities.

You saw in yesterday's edition of Fermilab Today the new record in luminosity set Friday. Even more remarkable is the fact that all of the last four stores had initial luminosities above the previous record, all around 1.2 E32 cm-2s-1. The accelerators have been combining these record luminosities with exceptional reliability, making it possible for the experiments to record data at a record rate. Last week was the best week for integrated luminosity, and April was the record month, with over 70 pb-1 delivered. The integrated luminosity delivered this year is about 0.28 fb -1, reaching that mark about 9 days ahead of schedule. If this keeps up, the integrated luminosity for the year should exceed the design goal of 0.47 fb-1 by August 8, the original date planned for the start of the annual shutdown. We are now planning on running several weeks longer this year, so the experiments will get significantly more than expected at the start of the year.
The Booster has delivered 1.7 E20 protons to the MiniBooNE target, bringing
the total for the duration of the experiment to 5.3E20. The one significant
difficulty in accelerator operations has been the water leak that occurred
inside the NuMI target enclosure on March 23. After extended work to understand
the situation and to modify the target, the target is functioning again without
a leak and the NuMI beam is back on. The people commissioning the NuMI beam
are doing low-intensity testing now, and hope to resume delivering neutrinos
regularly to MINOS within the next week.
