Fermilab's Philippe Canal
Fostering ROOT Development
Fermilab processes immense amounts of information every day, from the
common email message to experimental data on the most exotic particles.
|
Phillippe Canal |
How does the Computing Division do it? How will the additional data from the LHC be analyzed
once it is fully operational? One way is through a software package developed
in the early 1990's at CERN called ROOT. ROOT is a pseudo acronym; the double
O's referring to the Object Oriented analysis that is the heart of the software.
The ROOT means that the system is at the 'root' of high energy physics software.
Fermilab adopted the open-source software in 1998 to help with data analysis at
CDF and DZero. The central ROOT force at Fermilab is CD's Philippe Canal, who
joined the lab in 1995.
In preparation for the activation of the LHC a number of work packages have
been officially established within the ROOT network. Canal has been voluntarily
working on the IO and Dictionary and Interpreter packages since 1998. The I/O
assists in physically storing and restoring the data from experiment like DZero
and CDF. The Dictionary and Interpreter assists researchers in analyzing and
assessing their data objects. Since the project is so large, a delegation of
responsibility was required, and Canal is now officially in charge of the IO
and Dictionary and Interpreter packages.
"It is a great collaboration to create between Fermilab, CERN, and others around
the world," said Canal. "We have the ability to help so many physicists get so
much work done from so many countries."

CD's Richard Adamo Retires After 26 Years at Fermilab
Richard Adamo, a member of the Computing Division's in house computer
repair group, retires today after 26 years at Fermilab. He will retire
|
Richard Adamo |
at the Computer Professional V level.
The Chicago native came to Fermilab after attending Triton College. He served
in the US Air Force from 1965-1969, and then worked as a field engineer
for different companies.
His favorite part about working at Fermilab was the variety. "There was always
something new, all the time," said Adamo. "I was constantly moving in the
computer arena." Adamo will spend his retirement visiting Air Force buddies
that he was stationed with in Japan. He also plans to spend time working on
his house, where he has lived for over 30 years.

Extreme Matter: Mother of all material flows into view
by Peter Weiss
When matter was new in the universe, it was an exotic gas whose components later congealed into the more-ordinary matter made of atoms. At least, that was the story. Now, physicists trying to re-create that gas in an accelerator say that the universe's original stuff appears to have been a liquid.
Like the gas that had been expected, the ur-liquid the physicists made is ultrahot and ultradense—up to 150,000 times as hot as the sun's core and 100 times as dense as ordinary atomic nuclei.

Good Morning!
|
Mike Witherell |
The Division of Particle Physics (DPF) participates in one general meeting of the American Physical Society every year. This year it occurred on April 16-19 in Tampa. The range of contributions from the Fermilab research program covered almost every corner of research at the frontiers of particle physics.
Two Fermilab theorists, Chris Quigg and Rocky Kolb, gave plenary talks intended for physicists from all specialties.
Seventeen physicists associated with Fermilab gave invited talks at the sessions organized by the DPF. Nine of these physicists were members of the CDF and DZero collaborations talking about results from the collider program. The other invited talks covered neutrinos, astrophysics, accelerator physics, and the history of particle physics. Also, Pier Oddone gave the Panofsky Prize lecture on the evolution of the asymmetric B factory. Finally, 156 physicists delivered contributed papers on research done at Fermilab experiments.
You can count on even greater impact from Fermilab research at the APS
meeting next year. As the integrated luminosity increases at the collider
experiments, and the analyses become more mature, the CDF and DZero
physicists will produce yet more interesting results on such topics
as the properties of the top quark and the Bs meson. And our knowledge
of neutrino physics will take a big step in the next year when MiniBooNE
makes public the results of their search for a sterile neutrino.
