From March 30 to April 1, the TESLA Technology Collaboration met at DESY to work
on superconducting radiofrequency (SCRF) technology, which will be used for
the International Linear Collider (ILC). It was the first full meeting
of TESLA scientists under a new collaboration name. In September 2004,
members of the original TESLA collaboration agreed on a new
mission statement
following the recommendations of the International Technology Recommendation
Panel (ITRP). The mission of the collaboration is to advance SCRF technology
research and development and related accelerator aspects across the broad
diversity of scientific applications, and to keep open and provide a bridge
In August 2004, the ITRP had recommended for the ILC the use of superconducting or "cold" technology, which the TESLA collaboration had helped to develop. In addition, the ITRP had recommended that scientists should develop a new Technical Design Report for the ILC rather than adopting the TDR of the TESLA linear collider. The TESLA Technology Collaboration is expected to include most of the 55 institutions from thirteen countries of the old TESLA collaboration, with new institutions such as SLAC and KEK joining the collaboration. At the DESY meeting, the new Collaboration Board drafted a Memorandum of Understanding to be signed by all institutions participating in the new collaboration. Fermilab has been a member of TESLA for many years.
The SCRF technology is of importance not only for the ILC but also the X-ray
Free Electron Laser to be built at DESY and a superconducting proton beam line for
a neutrino factory. At the DESY meeting, working groups focused on R&D for
high-quality large-scale cavity production; next-generation cavity
infrastructures; and auxiliaries & module integration for the linear collider.

From Mercury News, April 14, 2005 Becoming social scientists Physicists Spruce Up Image in Bid to Change Attitudes, Grow Ranks by Kim Vo On the centennial of Albert Einstein's landmark papers that shook the foundations of physics, Neil Calder is pondering weighty issues -- atoms, dark matter and why there isn't a soap opera about physicists.
Physicists are just as interesting as doctors, argues Calder, director of communications at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. They have office romances, in-house politics. But alas, he suspects he knows the reason behind the snub: When you talk about physicists, he says, inevitably people imagine ``guys with bad hair.''

FNAL User Solomey Joins
arXiv.org Advisory Council Nickolas Solomey, a member of the MINERvA, MIPP, and KTeV projects and professor of physics at the Illinois Institute of Technology, is one of the new Physics Advisory Council members for arXiv.org. He is also
ArXiv.org is devoted to the free exchange of quality information in the fields of physics, mathematics, quantitative biology, computer science, and non-linear science. Solomey foresees a reorganization and future improvements to the HEP (High Energy Physics) website. He joined arXiv.org in 2001 as a moderator for the HEP-EX (Experimental) site to "ensure the highest standard of scientific excellence." Solomey welcomes comments or suggestions to improve the website.
Paul Ginsparg created the website in 1991 as a physics resource for Los Alamos
National Laboratory. In 1996, Ginsparg and arXiv.org moved to Cornell University
and urged the university's library to house and professionally maintain the
rapidly expanding website. Since then the website has expanded into other
fields and now receives approximately 300,000 hits per day. For an article
to be posted on the site, which is free of charge to submitters and readers,
it must go through three different automatic filter systems and be endorsed
by someone who has already been published on the site before it arrives on
Solomey's desk. "To say we get a few articles is an understatement," said
Solomey. "But it's not as much work as you would think."
