Beware of Gander!
A number of you may have encountered the pair of geese that have settled
right in front of the west entrance of Wilson Hall. Rumor has it that
the male goose has been protecting his mate by trying to attack any person
who attempts to enter the building. Apparently, he also really doesn't like
umbrellas.
In an effort to keep the geese away from employees and users,
FESS has installed some temporary orange fencing around the area.
Employees and Users should take extra caution as they enter
or leave the building. (And you may want to close your umbrella before getting
too close to the entrance of Wilson Hall.)

Repair Work Begins on Batavia Road, Near East Entrance to Fermilab
Tomorrow, April 14, preliminary repair work is scheduled for the rail
crossing at Batavia Road near the east Fermilab entry gate. The
pavement on each side of the track bed will be ground down to provide
a smoother transition over the tracks. The work should be completed
between 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in order to avoid times of increased
traffic volume.
Flagmen will be present to direct traffic during repair
operations. In general, one lane of traffic will be open during the
completion of the work; however, there will be short periods when both
lanes of traffic will be held for repositioning of equipment or train
passage. Employees are encouraged to use the Pine Street entrance
during this time if at all possible.
Fermilab continues to work with the City of Warrenville and the Burlington
Northern Santa Fe Railroad to develop a more permanent solution to this problem.
The plan will include improvements to drainage at the track bed and repaving
of Batavia Road adjacent to the tracks.
If you need to use the east entry during the repair operations,
please be patient and follow the direction of the posted flagmen at all times.

USPAS
In Tuesday's article "Barletta of Berkeley Lab
Named Director of USPAS," Fermilab Today incorrectly reported a
number of facts about the school. The most recent USPAS program was
sponsored by the University of California, Berkeley, not at San
Francisco University. Barletta's appointment as USPAS director will
begin on January 1, 2006. He has been a member of the board since 1994
and was named Chairman in 2000. Helmut Wiedemann, of Stanford University
and SLAC, is the current USPAS Director. The USPAS first held classes in
1981. As opposed to being a consortium, USPAS is governed and organized
by a consortium.
Penn is Mightier
In Monday's story on the Fermilab bracket in the NCAA men's basketball
tournament, Fermilab Today incorrectly (and regrettably) referred to
Penn State as a CDF institution and tournament participant. The
University of Pennsylvania ("Penn") is the correct institution.
Penn State is not a CDF collaborating institution, and the Penn
State men's basketball team did not make it into the NCAA tournament.
On the other hand, Penn made the tournament but lost in the first
round to Boston College. Penn senior Tim Begley was named honorable
mention All-America by the Associated Press. Begley, the 2005 Ivy
League Men's Basketball Player of the Year, also led the Quakers to
their third Ivy League title in four years.

Building Support in the House for the DOE Office of Science
Supporters of the Department of Energy's Office of Science are looking
for signatures on a letter that will be sent to House Energy and Water
Development Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman David Hobson (R-OH)
and Ranking Minority Member Peter Visclosky (D-IN). The deadline
for signatures is April 22.
"We have a long way to go to make up for years of inadequate budgets," the letter states, recommending that the FY 2006 appropriations bill significantly increase the funding for the Office of Science. This "Dear Colleague" letter was sent by House Energy Subcommittee Chair Judy Biggert (R-IL), Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-CA). A similar letter, with a fast approaching deadline, is circulating in the Senate.

Talented Undergrads Seek Motivating Fermilab Staff
Mentors Needed for SIST

Every year 15-20 undergraduates from colleges across the country come
to Fermilab to participate in the Summer Internships in Science &
Technology for Minority Students program. This intensive twelve-week
program is a success year after year not only because of the highly motivated
interns but also because of dedicated mentors. And this year, SIST needs additional
Fermilab scientists to mentor students.
"We want the interns to have jobs that have some sort of scientific or
engineering value," said Accelerator Division's Elliott McCrory,
Head of the Fermilab SIST Committee. "They need to understand how their
job enhances Fermilab."
The SIST program begins at the end of May and concludes in August
with a series of presentations given by the interns based upon
their summer projects. Each intern also writes a final paper,
all of which are available online.
"SIST gives students a real work experience because they do actual projects
that a section or division needs to get done," said Dianne Engram, Head of
Fermilab's Equal Employment Office, which has been funding the summer program
since it started almost 35 years ago. "Mentors get the opportunity to guide
a young person and strengthen their resolve for a challenging career."
Any Fermilab employee or user who is stationed at the lab for more than
half of the twelve weeks can volunteer to be a mentor. Fermilab's EEO
pays the interns a weekly stipend and covers the general costs of the
program. The only thing that mentors really need to give is time.
"The students are top-notch, and they will get the work done,"
McCrory said. "But you need to work with the student. If you put
time into it, you will find it extremely rewarding."
If you're interested in being a mentor this summer, please contact
Elliott McCrory or
Dianne Engram by April 15.
A form is also available online.
