Escorts in Fermilab Property Protection Areas | ||

Although much of Fermilab's site is currently open to the public, this is
not true of Property Protection Areas
(see map).
Fermilab ID badges are required to
be worn by all persons in PPAs; these badges are obtained from the Users'
Office during normal working hours, and from the Communications Center
in off-hours. For non-US citizens, the Department of Energy requires that
certain information be collected on the visitor, which includes copying
the visitor's passport and US visa in order to verify legal status in the US.
There are two situations in which obtaining an ID badge is not possible or not
practical:
In case #1, the PPA staff will normally provide the escort. The escort will complete a form to provide information on the escort and the visitor; the visitor will be given a temporary escortee badge at the Communications Center. In case #2, temporary escortee badges for members of the tour group will be available at the Communications Center. The escort must also complete the form to provide information on the escort and the visitors. For tour groups of 10 or more, reduced information is needed on each member of the tour, and only the escort will wear an ID badge.
Forms are available at the Users' Office, the Communications Center,
and online at the Users' Office Web site. Completed forms should be sent to
the Users' Office.

From the Interactions.org News Wire, April 5, 2005 UK forges ahead in accelerator research and development The John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science appoints its first director.
The Institute is one of two** UK university centres created by the
Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council [PPARC] with a combined
£21 million programme of research and development in accelerator
technology for future facilities including an International Linear
Collider and a Neutrino Factory with the objective of positioning UK
academic groups to win major shares in the design and construction of
these global facilities.

Robin Staffin Addresses Fermilab Community on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. All members of the Fermilab community are encouraged to join Robin Staffin, Associate Director for High Energy Physics for DOE's Office of Science, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in Ramsey Auditorium. Staffin will discuss the perspective of the Office of Science on Fermilab's key role in the future of US particle physics. The talk will be broadcast to One West, and on Channel 9 within Fermilab. A link to live streaming video will be available. |

PPD Achieves One Million
Injury-Free Staff Hours | ||

Fermilab's Particle Physics Division has now exceeded 1,000,000 staff hours,
or 402 days, without a lost-time injury. This is currently second to the
Computing Division, which now has over 1.5 million injury-free staff hours.
Overall, the lab is up to 96 days without a lost-time injury, and employees
are encouraged to check the ES&H Web site to see if they have won a Fermilab
polo shirt.
PPD head Jim Strait is pleased with the focus on safety. "We asked people if
there were conditions that they felt were unsafe," he said. "One employee
told us 'whenever we see something unsafe, we change it to make it safe.'"
Strait also stressed the collaborative effort within the division. "This is
the work of nearly 500 PPD people. The safety culture has really sunk in
here," said Strait.
