Indian Physicist Anuj Purwar Joins Quantum Diaries | ||

From South Africa to Russia, the physicists on Quantum Diaries span the globe.
And now Anuj Purwar, a postdoc at Los Alamos National Laboratory,
is the 32nd blogger to join the
Web site, adding India to the list of participating countries.
Born in New Delhi, Purwar got hooked on physics after reading "Einstein's Universe" by Nigel Calder. He obtained a degree in physics from Delhi University and moved to the United States in 1998 to pursue a doctorate in physics at SUNY-Stony Brook. He is currently a member of the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Long Island, NY.
When Purwar isn't studying heavy flavor production at RHIC, he can be found
ballroom dancing, making Web sites to woo his wife and most recently learning
how to ski. In his blog, you can read all about his life at Los Alamos and
how he and his wife met over the
internet. "I had advertised myself as 'Dancing Nuclear Physicist Seeking Smart,
Self-Aware Woman'," Purwar wrote in a recent blog. "Our first date was at Pascalou, a quaint
eatery in the Upper East Side of Manhattan...Something clicked between us
and before I knew, I was asking her to marry me on the web."

World Year of Physics Event: Einstein to Visit Argonne | ||

In celebration of the World Year of Physics,
"Einstein the Man," a play presenting the ideas of the great physicist
in his own words, will be performed at Argonne by Emmy Award-winning
actor Bill Landry on Thursday, April 7 and at the University of Chicago on
Friday, April 8.
Landry uses Einstein's own words to portray the physicist's scientific work, philosophical ideas and personal idiosyncrasies. Following the performance, Landry takes questions as Einstein, then removes his extensive makeup to answer questions about the play. Landry has presented the play, which he also wrote, more than 850 times to audiences that now total more than 500,000 in 38 states. The play has also been adapted for National Public Radio and for PBS television. Two performances will be held at Argonne on Thursday, April 7, both in the Building 362 Auditorium. The first performance at 3:00 p.m. is only for Argonne employees. The second performance at 7:00 p.m. is open to the general public. The Enrico Fermi Institute and the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics at the University of Chicago will host a performance at the University's Hyde Park campus on Friday, April 8, at 10 a.m.
The play is appropriate for children in middle school and older.
Non-employees wishing to attend the performance should pre-register
by calling (630) 252-5580. A photo ID is required for all attendees 16
years of age and older.

Good Morning!
Important physics results are expected from MiniBooNE late this year, using the data sample collected up to this year's shutdown. They will be able to check the evidence from the LSND experiment of a neutrino oscillation that would require a complete rethinking of neutrino physics. Another event in the last week was the DOE review of Tevatron. They gave the laboratory high marks for managing operations of the experimental program over the last year, especially for accelerator performance. They also said that the future goals for the rest of Run II and for the neutrino program represented a real challenge, particularly within the tight budgets that are now foreseen.
I agree. We have set design goals for Run II and for the neutrino program that
challenge the laboratory, in an attempt to optimize the physics coming from both
programs over the next few years.

From Science, April 1, 2005 High-Energy Physics: Exit America? by Charles Seife Budget cuts and cancellations threaten to end U.S. exploration of the particle frontier Monday, 7 February, was a grim day for the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). "You wake up, you go to a presentation, and you find out you're dead," says Fermilab physicist Joel Butler. Butler is co-spokesperson of an experiment known as BTeV--a multimillion-dollar project that would allow scientists to study the properties of the bottom quark. But that Monday, when the new Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman took to the podium to announce the department's budget request for 2006, BTeV scientists were horrified to discover that their project had been canceled. read more |

Calling All NCAA Basketball Fans Last year, Fermilab Today ran an article about the results of the NCAA basketball tournament among experiment collaborations, and we plan to do the same thing this year.
